Praying now a threat to airline safety!

Some fellow passengers are questioning why an Orthodox Jewish man was removed from an Air Canada Jazz flight in Montreal last week for praying.

The man was a passenger on a Sept. 1 flight from Montreal to New York City when the incident happened.

The airplane was heading towards the runway at the Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport when eyewitnesses said the Orthodox man began to pray.

"He was clearly a Hasidic Jew," said Yves Faguy, a passenger seated nearby. "He had some sort of cover over his head. He was reading from a book.

"He wasn't exactly praying out loud but he was lurching back and forth," Faguy added.

The action didn't seem to bother anyone, Faguy said, but a flight attendant approached the man and told him his praying was making other passengers nervous.

"The attendant actually recognized out loud that he wasn't a Muslim and that she was sorry for the situation but they had to ask him to leave," Faguy said.

The man, who spoke neither English nor French, was escorted off the airplane.

Air Canada Jazz termed the situation "delicate," but says it received more than one complaint about the man's behaviour.

The crew had to act in the interest of the majority of passengers, said Jazz spokeswoman Manon Stewart.

"The passenger did not speak English or French, so we really had no choice but to return to the gate to secure a translator," she said.

The airline is not saying if the man was told he was not allowed to pray, but a spokesperson said the man was back on board the next flight to New York.

Jewish leaders in Montreal criticized the move as insensitive, saying the flight attendants should have explained to the other passengers that the man was simply praying and doing no harm.

Hasidic Rabbi Ronny Fine said he often prays on airplanes, but typically only gets curious stares.

"If it's something that you're praying in your own seat and not taking over the whole plane, I don't think it should be a problem," said Fine.

The Jewish group B'nai Brith Canada has offered to help give Air Canada crews sensitivity training.

In today's environment, do you really need to pray and lurch back and forth in your seat during the flight, for christ's sake? Especially if you can't otherwise communicate with anyone on board? Couldn't it wait until destination, or have been taken care of before boarding???

Use some common sense, people.

It really is too much that this guy can't pray for a safe flight to destination. Then again, if he were muslim and praying, buddy'd be in jail and the crew would be getting cheers for protecting the skies.

woah I'm still a redneck facist capitalist.

I still think muslums and other middle easterns should be carefully screened before they get on board aircraft. Once onboard and once they are screened I think we should leave them alone. I don't want to see the world become like a witch hunt but I still stand by the fact that the people trying to destroy the west are not little old ladies or middle aged white guys.

Valid point CD, but he doesn't fit the description. That is a crazy mudda-fuggin white kid!

We keep hearing that in todays society racial profiling is wrong, but you would have to agree that most people are aware of who the present enemy is.

On the praying, some Hasidic's pray continuously, every waking hour not just a quick prayer and on with your day...

I took a B767-300ER Gulf Air flight from Abu Dhabi to Dar es Salam about six years ago. During the flight, I used the forward toilet and found the captain on his knees praying. When I was done, he was finishing up. I jokingly told him it was a good thing I understood Muslims because most westerners would freak if they found a captain praying mid flight.

How sad we have come to associate prayer with extreme violence, two utter extemes.

I worked at a control tower where some would take 15min break to go pray. Christians and muslims working together, while some guy is praying and facing mecca, we had others in mini skirts and tank tops working the frequency. We had in the same shift, a doctor of theology working alongisde muslims while they pray on their knees in the back of the cab.

Not only aviation experience, but life experience in general for an 18 yr old kid to experience.

Ah the memories... :partyman:

What prompted metal detectors to be put into place in airports anyway, way back when? How long have they been around, and was it in response to a specific incident in the air?

Continously, every waking hour? Are they praying, or are they possessed? What religious logic requires you to pray continously?

What religious logic tells you to cut yourself in the head with razors? What religious logic tells you to nail yourself to a cross at easter? What religious logic tells you to abstain from sex? what kind of religious logic tells you to get circumsized? what kind of religious logic tells you no meat on fridays or no pork ever? what kind of religiousl logic tells you women can not speak? what kind of religious logic tells you to persecute homosexuals? what kind of religious logic tells you to follow a man who allegadly commited miracles? what kind of religious logic tells you to praise an allegid virgin having conceved a child? what kind of religious logic teaches you to obey the teachings of an ominipitous(sp?) being? what kind of religious logic teaches you to kill non believers? what kind of religious logic makes you wear a beard?

Religion dosnt make anysense when you really think about it.

A wise man once said.... "Religion is like the lottery, all you can do is pick one and hope you win."

It is actually more the Orthodox and prayer and reading the Torah. You see them wandering around Israel nose to the book, to the point that they do not hold jobs. They are supported by their synagogue.

I don't make the rules, shit the last time I was in a church I spontaneously combusted!
