new hires in their 40's??

Post by helinas »

Hi guys, working on the ramp I noticed first officers on the Embraiers look like they are in their 40's. Has Air Canada hired guys because I know they have new guys starting all the time on the EMB's in their 40's?

Just wondering, as well I see some new faces at Jazz in their 40's. I guess it's no big issue hiring guys in their 40's.

Any input would be great.

thanks

It shouldn't be an issue hiring pilots in their 40s, or 50s for that matter, otherwise it would be considered discrimination under The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

I don't get it either cause 20 year olds are far superior pilots!

In general it is cheaper for airlines (in the long run) to hire and train a younger pilot. The theory being they will be with you for 30-40 years.

But even at 40 years of age the company is still getting close to 20 year sout of them potentially.

.....and chances are.....they bring a wealth of experience and might be able to take an upgrade on the junglejet a lot quicker than the 1500 hour wonder.

Ya think there is hope for me...... as an RP pilot on the A340 or B767. I could probably read the checklist to the Capt or F/O. can even set up the FMS(still have my trusty UNS-1B manual and the software is loaded on my computer). Always loved fucking around with the FMS, loading up the arrivals, approaches 8)

One of the reasons that I heard for hiring all different ages is to avoid large retirement "peaks" in the future.

Helps to mitigate legacy costs as well. Guy in his forties has less than 20 years to build up his pension benefits. Benefits won't be as costly as a 25 year old who will have 35 years and build up a large benefit plan.

Keep in mind training is training...whether you are 40 or 20. The company has to pay for training anyway. Annual and bi-annual training costs the company the same regardless. The only difference is...the guy hired in his forties will be making less at 50 than the 20 year old will be when he reaches 50. And as 727driver suggested, pension will be alot less. Probably cheaper to go with the older guy in the end.

A friend of mine is in ground school at mainline right now - says the ages are 32 to 38, plus one guy who is 45 (ex-military.) All 5000hrs minimum.

A possibility is that you are seeing a First Officer who has been with the company awhile, doing his command upgrade.

No not at all, just that you will see guys in their 20's as well as 40's on the airplane, new hire or upgrade. I have seen some new hires in their late 30's and 40's but most are in their 20's.
