Flight plan misfiled, Nav Canada admits

Human error was behind a two-day delay before searchers began looking for a missing plane that crashed in Nunavut in the summer, Nav Canada spokesman Louis Garneau says.
Pilot David Klapstein was flying from a mining camp on July 24 when his Cessna 206 crashed near Repulse Bay.
Klapstein and his plane were missing for two days before the search was launched. It took another two days to find him.
He was located about eight kilometres from the plane with a badly split lip and wearing only one shoe.
Garneau said the search was delayed because Klapstein's flight plan was misfiled.
"The delay in alerting search and rescue authorities was the result of the flight plan being inadvertently moved to an inactive status and subsequently closed," said Garneau in an interview Monday.
"This is a case of a human error and we regret it. And we've expressed our sincere regrets to the pilot."
Nav Canada successfully handles millions of flight plans a year and does not plan any changes because of this incident, Garneau said.

JC I would be interested in hearing more about what you mean. I fly fairly regular in that part of the world and I'm not sure what review you think should be undertaken. If a flight plan was filed what more is required? I know it is not uncommon for flight plans to be misplaced judging by the number of times we have called up for a clearance and been asked if we filed.just curious wrote:It was missing for only a few hours when we got called to look for the guy...
Perhaps a review of how and why to file flight plans in the ADIZ as well as a developed plan to figure out how to advise termination of plans is in order for new-comers to our part of the world.
