hearing Requirements for cat 1 medical

Post by CYQT »

Anyone know what the hearing requirements are for a category 1 medical cert. Has anyone ever heard of anyone deinied their medical due to hearing alone, do you think i should be worried about a light hearing loss?

I heard from my aviation doc that in the absolute worst case scenario, someone from TC will go flying with ya, and if you can hear the radio OK with the volume cranked, you're good to go.

But here's a link to medical requirements.

http://www.tc.gc.ca/CivilAviation/Regse ... t42402.htm

Hearing requirements are about 2/3 the way down the list.

I believe if you need them, you can also use hearing aids... have no reference to back this up though.

my left ear is a bit worse than my right ear... but the numbers on the test ended up being higher than what i expected (higher than average hearing). You never know, those ears tend to be tricky; sometimes you might feel that you're hearing worse than you really are.

Don't worry, you'll be fine.

My take on it is that since you're going for a CAT I that you've gone up in a plane with a headset on, whether for a PPL or just a fam flight, if you heard atc and your instructor fine, you're alright :)

This has gotta be one of the silliest Transport requirements ... most experienced pilots I know, after tens of thousands of hours of flying over many decades, are deaf as fenceposts.

So, Transport wants you to have good hearing, so you can lose it?!

What I find worrying is that there are guys flying out there (not commercially though) that are deaf and/or colourblind. I would imagine that anyone completely deaf would be restricted to uncontrolled airspace. Guys colourblind, would they be restricted also? Just thinking about a comm failure while flying within a control zone.
