Walker,
I have contacts already lol, i obviosuly wouldnt be walking around with 20/400 vision, wouldnt go over too well...
Miss Mae,

The regulations state that your uncorrected vision must be no less than 20/200 in each eye, and the refractive error must fall within the range of 3.0 diopters.

Nothing obvious about it. There is nothing wrong with "walking around with 20/400". I've done it since I was 8, and mine is not fixable. You can even get a Cat 3 medical and a private licence under the "monocular" provision, as I have done.Aaron Lehman wrote:Walker,

So you should be able to get your private now, and just wait until you are 20 (according to a LASIK FAQ), before doing the surgery and persuing the further Commercial. 20 may seem like an eternity when you are 16, but trust me... it will hit before you are ready for it.
But are you sure that your condition is sufficiently correctible by Laser?

Thanks for the reply icebound,
sorry, i thought i made it clear when i stated my corrected vision. But you have me a little confused, you say that you have uncorrectable 20/400 vision, but yet you have a PPL, thats impressive. I know i sure as hell couldnt fly a plane, let alone even see the instrument panel without my contacts.
And is there any chance youd be able to hook me up with a link (if you have one) of the requirements needed to be fit for laser surgery? Ive spoken to my optometrist about it, he didnt mention to me that i would be unfit. thanks again.

I'm 20/800 in my left eye, 20/600 in the right. Corrected to 20/30 and 20/20 respectively. I've never had an issue with my cat 1.
Do you wear glasses or contacts? I find there's a big difference.
Contacts enhance my prephrial and eliminate glare all together.
Not gonna bother with laser...at least not in the near to medium term.
Get yourself a good doc and try a few brands of contacts. There will be one pair that suits you the best.
Good luck.

wow, thanks guys, thats very releiving to hear... does anybody have a link that states the up-to-date regulations???
BTW i wear contacts and am very happy with them, my corrected vision is perfect (20/15) i was under the impression that your uncorrected vision had to be 20/200 and within 3.0 diopters, but i guess not, thanks for the good news.

Keep in mind that CARS are not the law; The Aeronautics act is the actual law, and it says to refer to TC, TC says to refer to CARS; however TC can override the CARS, so it becomes what TC medical has to say about it; I would find a CAME and get their opinion, then call up TC in your area and talk to the head doc get his opinions as to what you should do, seeing as its going to be her/his ultimate decision to license you or not…

Not that impressive at all.
I am 20/400 CORRECTED (uncorrectable) in ONE eye, and like 20/30 corrected to 20/20 in the other.
And believe me, there is absolutely no trouble functioning.
The key may be that I have full peripheral vision in both, I just can't read or make out anything distinctly with that ONE. If I were to put a patch over and block it out altogether, if would certainly make a difference, but I am pretty sure I could still function quite well.... I don't know if TC would agree necessarily, but they certainly accepted my current state with minimal questions.
There is a stock set of 6 questions they ask the ophtamologist about monocular applicants:
1. The distance and near-sight corrected and uncorrected readings
2. a brief history of why sight was lost in the bad eye
3. Anything at all wrong medically with the GOOD eye.
4. Any hint that the residual vision in the bad eye is interfering instead of helping
5. the visual fields (I assume this means peripherial vision) for each eye
6. His opinion on psychological acceptance by the owner
If they like the ophtamologists answers to those six questions, the monocular applicant should have no problem

Re: Vision Advice
I'm at AC and have eyes worse than that. Never a problem with the Cat 1 and am correctable to 20/20 with contacts/glasses, no astigmatism. A special trip to my opthamologist for intial screening and thats it - they can't hold you back if you don't have an eye disease and just bad uncorrected vision. If you meet the TC cat 1 - CORRECTABLE to 20/20 (that's it) you're good to go.Aaron Lehman wrote:Alright heres the deal. I am 16 years old, live in Ontario and plan to go to an aviation university program (UWO, Waterloo) My vision is as follows;
UNCORRECTED - Right: 20/400 Left: 20/400
CORRECTED - Right: 20/20 Left: 20/20
REFRACTIVE ERROR - Right:-4.75D Left:-6.50D
ASTIGMATISM - Right: -1.75D Left:-0.50D
I understand that I am well beyond the vision requirements for a category 1 medical. And probably a bit too young to have LASIK or PRK done quite yet. So i guess what i'm really asking is should i go for the eye surgery anyway and hope for the best? which surgery do you recommend? if not, are there any other solutions for this problem?
Thanks in advance, and any advice is greatly appreciated.
P.S. If your advice to me is to give up, then please save yourself some time and don't post, i am determined to fly commercially one day and will find a solution no matter what it takes. thanks.
Aaron
No laser/prk for me. Many stabilization horror stories - could be months before you're flying again, if at all.
