Thompson Manitoba

Post by gapper »

If you are the typical arrogent little prick that I have witnessed comming out of the flight colledges, stay the hell away from Thompson. It will be far too small and "bush league' for you. If you are a hardworking young pilot that truly appreciates the opportunity to learn about aviation from some really fine oldtimers of northern flying, then you may very well find Thompson a warm and friendly place. You may also find Thompson not to your liking if you are a racist biggot.

What's the name of that Sherry that comes in the plastic bottles? That'll get you going in the morning...along with a hearty meal of Deep Woods Off and bread.

Incidently, it's not made in Windsor.

The only whiskey made in Windsor is...

And its variants.

Every time I'm a bit homesick, I drink a pile of this stuff. Then I forget how homesick I am. I also forget other stuff.

Not liking Thompson has little to do with racism. It has to do with rampant alcoholism, drug abuse, unpunished crime, and STDs, and 3 levels of government that are unwilling or unable to solve these problems. If that's your thing, you'll love it regardless of the friends you make. Otherwise, choose your friends wisely, and you'll be fine.

They got it a couple weeks ago. Crystal's Diner closed down, and re-opened as a Robin's. I'm probably gonna have a heart attack because my office is right next to it.

Canadas reserve system is no different from South Africas former apartheid system.

The only real difference is that Canada has not gotten rid of theirs yet.

You can still get a "trucker's special" if you want. I remember when some guys I work with would try to have competitions as to who can finish their's the quickest. I think the record was around 10 minutes.

I don't know for sure, but it sure sounds to me like phillyfan knows Thompson better than gapper. I can think of one true "oldtimer" who knows anything about northern flying and haven't come across too many people who are warm and/or friendly. Plenty of vacant skulls however. No, if you're a racist biggot Thompson will not be to your liking, but then again, if you are not a racist biggot, you will be after no less than 2 months in Thompson.

What is the difference between a tourist and a racist?

thompson is not that bad, you just have to get used to the locals wanting your shopping cart so they can get the loonie for returning it. southern belle still gets upset when they try and help you put your grocries in your vehicle and get blood all over the grocries because someone has taken the boots to them and are bleeding from there wounds. it s even worse when you are driving an americans vehicle (i store them in my KINGDOM then drive to thomspon and pick them up at the airport so they can go fishing) the locals see the out of country plate and swarm all over the vehicle wanting hand out, plus get blood all over the vehicle too. but once you get used to it thompson is a nice place.

will check out robins at the airport next time i'm there.

C'mon, ., that's BS!
I'll agree that, perhaps, the results are similar - but the systems are vastly different. Where is it required in Canada that, by law, Aboriginals have to live on their reserves, have to have passes to walk around the rest of the country, aren't allowed to attend the same schools, etc...Nowhere.

Funny someone brings that up; When the government of South Africa was looking at implementing apartheid they used the Canadian Reserve system as their model.

There was even documented use of Passbooks being used into the 1920's. An Indian Agent requested more passbooks from his head office, at which point he was told they were supposed to have stopped using them about 10 years prior.....

Apparently so...
The history of the Indian people for the last century has been the history of the impingement of white civilization upon the Indian: the Indian was virtually powerless to resist the white civilization; the white community of B.C. adopted a policy of apartheid. This, of course, has already been done in eastern Canada and on the Prairies, but the apartheid policy adopted in B.C. was of a particularly cruel and degrading kind. They began by taking the Indians' land without any surrender and without their consent. Then they herded the Indian people onto Indian reserves. This was nothing more nor less than apartheid, and that is what it still is today.

...

South Africa is not the only country where the Native population has been set apart legally, geographically and economically on a purely genetic basis. Canada also used a variety of strategies to methodically remove Native people from their lands to make way for immigrants, including actual physical extermination.

Newfoundland for example, Beothuk were completely extinct 1829, in part because of a bounty system that encouraged systematic massacre. For those who shy away from the suggestion that parallel exist between conditions in Canada and South Africa, it is important realize that "simply because the framework of apartheidism is not written into a constitution does not mean that it is not a component nor a reality nation."

Although the laws and policies of the two countries are not the same as the existence of racial repression which allies them, and not the degree or extent to which it occurs. While the intensity of personal oppression varies considerably, the result is the same as in South Africa: "The native population has been herded on to reduced territories in order to make way for others."

Nice post CD, I'd never read that particular article but definately have heard the issue before.

The only contention I would have with that particular piece is the reference to the Beothuk; All the research I ever read indicated that they became extinct because they moved inland when the europeans landed in Newfoundland, dispalcing them culturally and probably putting them at odds with their neighbours. From what I've always understood, they were a fairly small group so it wouldn't have taken much for them to become extinct. Still, a lost people is a lost people.

And sorry for the hijack, although having lived in Thompson before and worked there I wouldn't sweat it too much.

 YES..."typical".

Who the hell do you think you are making stupid-ass comments like that? Keep in mind that there are a handful of "college grads" flying/working in YTH right now, most of them captains, and none, captains, F/O's or rampies are "arrogent little pricks".

Let the guys/gals make their own mind about the town instead of telling them to stay away just because they went to a Flight College and it would too "bush league"...give me a break  Your perception of the students who attend flight colleges is completely screwed.

By the way, Thompson is by far the "bush league" that you think. Given the amenities now available in town, its a far cry from the many northern dwellings that deserve to be mentioned. Dont try and place yourself on a pedestal just because you work north of 55!

:o wow some not so nice words about the Hub of the North  I've been in Thompson for 17 years, it does have its challenges at times and yes I get fed up with the crap I see downtown but as long as they stay out of my way thats fine, and the crap you see down town they usually fight amoung themselves, hopefully with the new Mayor and some new council members we can deal with the problem, I must say I've never had anyone bleed on my groceries   good one lol. Thompson has a lot to offer more businesses have open which took to long I think but we are finanly getting what we deserve, you can make your money in this town you can get started in other oportunities that you won't have a chance elsewhere. As for living here its what you make it, like anywhere else, if you like the outdoors this is the place :D
