gst

Post by 22l »

When renting at the flying club GST and PST are added [ except for some hrs. to obtain some ratings like CPL] i guess 35% of the hourly rate is the cost of fuel so i figure that if i get DRY rate all the time[ XC + local] i will be saving about 5% total or ONE FREE hr every twenty
When i approched the club manager to discus it i was told the old "sorry no can do that is the way it is" so continue to pay taxes on something that is allready tax to death and be happy......
Anyone with similar experiences?

Sure.

Whenever I take a taxi same thing. The driver won't let me buy the gas myself and tells me tough I have to pay tax on the whole fare.

Whenever I go to the steak house I offer bring my own steaks from my hunting trip to save a few bucks both on the meat and taxes and the chef gets all bent out of shape.

Anyways there are lots of other examples of unreasonable businesses not wanting to help out poor old you and me save a few dollars in taxes.

Stupid comparisons.

You don't "rent" a taxi to drive it yourself. You don't go to a restaurant to "rent" the kitchen space.

A more apt one would be renting a car, where you do in fact usually have the option to buy fuel prepaid, or fill it yourself.

Some flight training organizations do have "wet" and "dry" rates for rental. 22l, take your business to another outfit that has more flexibility. I don't begrudge a business owner from making a profit but if they're marking up fuel as well, I call that gouging.

The Borden Flying Club was charging GST and remitting it back to Revenue Canada on their 172 and they contested it and won. You don't have to pay GST on an aircraft you own if you are a member of the club. the Borden club is set up where the members are the owners of the plane/assets.

This was a couple of years ago when I was a member. Best to check with them to get the exact particulars.

This actually happened to me quite a while ago... rented an aircraft and flew all through the US. Anyway to cut a long explanation short they calculated GST on our fuel we purchased in the US... we sorted it out, but definitely only after a close eye.

Will renting "dry" ever save you money???

The renter's "dry" rate will take into account the cost of fuel as per the wholesale or bulk rate that the renter can get. The rentee, on the other hand, will never be able to get fuel at that rate.

The last time I questioned a nameless renter about the difference between their wet and dry rate (about a year ago), it was stated that the rate was based on an 85cent liter. ( In fact, if you rented wet, and had to add fuel from another FBO, that was what they would reimburse you at, regardless of actual cost. )

I don't know... when was 100LL last 85c??
