Working as a pilot in Canada

Post by bokboy22 »

Hi

Just wanted to say hello and see if a Low time pilot can get work in Vancouver preferably, but Canada in general. Having a career change

I come from an IT background. I am a 33 year old South African male on a British passport with a South African CPL/IR-Multi and Australian CPL and grade 3 instructor rating. I only have 650 hours TT of which about 60 are multi on light twins, Barons etc...

I would like to immigrate to Canada from Australia, where I currently live. Any advice on who I should approach about work as a pilot first, but an aviation company for work in general.

Thanks for your help

I would say it will be very difficult for you to fly here immediately, but there is a shortage of IT people and certainly Whistler is full of Aussies here for winter skiing, so if you wanted to come here and work at something else, that would give you time to scope out the flying possibilities.

I would hazard a guess that it is nearly impossible to find an entry-level flying job in Vancouver. Most have to do a tour of the bush first, but like I say, come and check it out.

Thanks, appreciate that.

I am more than willing to go bush first, a lot of the South African pilots do that as well, Jo'berg and of to deepest darkest Africa, no work their now either!!!

I will go anywhere for the work as a pilot, even just to get into an aviation company, with the possibility of a pilots position becoming available.

Anyone has any ideas, please send them my way.

Please, please read some more posts on this site it is full of negative people that will tell you to give up being a pilot in this country because no body will hire you unless you work the ramp for a half a dozen years or so.
You will notice this site is full of negative pilots that seem to be disgruntled with something.
Think it carefully please, and don't forget that you never will buy a PPC and please don't work for free or for peanuts, please we have plenty of those doing that right now ruining the pilot industry as we don't need anymore.

Good luck with what ever you want to do and never give up doing what you love the RIGHT WAY!!

TESTICLES. THIS INDUSTRY NEEDS TESTICLES. Helinas has no testicles, that is why this industry has no "HIM". Grow some of these Helinas...

Disregard Helinas, bokboy22, it may not come immediately, like XSBANK said, but hard work, dedication, perseverence and a little bit of luck should get you somewhere.

Good luck in getting to this wonderful country.

"alot of testicles"

I only have two, I couldn't imagine having more, or less for that matter.

helinas i don't really get you. on Mondays you make random posts teasing low timer's into thinking you know a guy that will let them build multi hours on his machine. than on Tuesdays you post about finding a way to build multi hours for your own sake. than on Wednesdays you post about applying to ggn with 500 hours. than on Thursday’s you post about starting your own company and all of sudden you're a 20 year ramp veteran for ac. and on Friday’s you seem to be the fuckin' expert. what's on the agenda for this weekend?

cheers

nothing really going on this weekend. If I was an expert I wouldn't be on this forum talking to you. That is why I ask these stupid questions, so I can get some input or info from guys like yourself.

You know man, aviation here in Canada is most times too hard to handle and all I am doing is shooting ideas whether they are bad or good. I know I have been ridiculed and called names and hey I can't stop it. I will try from now on not to ask any more dumb questions or make any more stupid remarks.

Regarding the airplane that I know that guys can build some multi time is real and true because I flew it for about 100 hours. It is a 1966 piper apache and it is not the greatest looking maching but it has an autopilot and a gps on it and they will let only guys to fly it when they are in the cockpit as well due to insurance, this is what they say. No problem on my part, I fly and log the time and for now it is down for some maintenance and they dont even know when it will up and running.
So I am not bullshitting you in regards to this twin, and If I make some dumb ass remarks sorry man, just trying to deal with aviation and I just don't think I like to throw away 17 years and not 20 as you mentioned of seniority at Air Canada for nothing.

Av8tor accept my apologies for asking dumb ass questions.

have a great weekend.

Thanks guys

Appreciate all of your input. I guess it can be frustrating, but you just gotta keep knocking on doors until one opens.

Like many pilots, I gave up a career to pursue a career in aviation, spent all my money, have no job, but it has been worth it.

Travelled to Canada, loved it and want to make a go of it there. I dont care if I fly drunk fisherman up and down the coast to get my hours, so that an airline might take me, flying is flying, regardlesss whether you walk into the cockpit or crawl.

I hear you guys are short of float pilots, not sure if it is true but, will do a float rating. Chat to you soon, all the best lads, thanks.

If you think Canadian aviation is in bad shape, come see Australias, it is absolutely screwed, CAA over here being run by complete clowns. Blind monkeys would do a better job.

Hi, you might want to look into the immigration process somewhat.... can be rather slow and frustrating. Took me 2.5 years from Scotland recently.
However, the job market is definitely way better than it was for low timers, so good luck. I would be real happy if I had 650!
And Canada is a great place to live and fly.

Hi

You need to be aware that Transport Canada not recognize foreign licences, you need to pass a PSTAR, Comercial, INRAT (IFR), and practical CPL, multi, and IFR. (It took me 8k and 1 year to convalidate).
PM if you want more details.
Good luck.
