Need Feedback On The X11 Please! Xmas Is Coming

Post by critical engine »

Well xmas is around the corner, and the lady was asking what I want. Before I tell her, I would like some feedback. How is the ANR? Is it a decent passive headset too? How does the cell/mp3 plug work? do the songs cut out when ATC comes on? Do sunglasses break the seal?

thanks

mp3 or cell phone plug into the top of the battery pack, you can have either or in, but not both at the same time, and they do cut out when atc talks to you, having never used another noise cancelling headset, i dont know how it compares, with the noise cancelling on it is very good, and even with it off it is still pretty good, my sunglasses dont break the seal.

tried one for a few minutes. I have a 13.4XL and the noise cancelling was the same. It was lighter and more comfortable than the XL, with the biggest improvement coming from the clamping force. If you already have a noise cancelling headset I would say not worth the upgrade. If you're in the market for your first one, I'd say very seriously think about the costs. It's a few hundred more than the XL.

Tried on the X11 and while I am usually a big DC fan, I have a pair of Lightspeeds that I think does a better job and costs a lot less.

Nope I liked the X11 better, i'm not sure that I liked it $300 better though. Can your headset be retrofitted with an ANR kit(i think almost all older DC headsets can be)? If so that might be the most affordable option. I think the kits go for less than $200. So you'd save $800 that you could put into a RRSP or something else.

Is it possible to modify an older headset so that you can plug an mp3 player into it? The X-11 is a little (actually a lot) more than I want to spend on a headset right now, but in the future it may be nice to have the music option.

I just got the X11 because my previous DC was stolen a month ago. The best thing about this headset is the comfort, it is very light and comfortable. The noise cancelling works well too. My only beef is that certain parts seem cheaply made because it is only plastic, but it is backed with the standard david clark warranty so we shall see how it holds up.

I e-mailed DC to ask if they planned on selling an updated XL-9V box with an accessory input (I have a DC 10-13X headset from a couple of months before the X11 came out), and while I know my request made it to their sales department, I don't know if it got any further. Perhaps having enough people ask for this might make it a reality...

Could someone with an avionics/electronics background say if modifying an existing ANR box is reasonable? Would it be possible to lower/cut the music when ATC/other crew are talking in such a case?

Some people here gave vague descriptions of cable splitters they used to provide an accessory input. Would it be possible to get some more details? Pictures?

Thanks,

Louis

Since were on the topic of headsets. I'm another pilot who desperately needs to upgrade. I have had the chance to try the Bose. Obviously a huge improvement from my 'dinosaur' AvComms. The Lightspeeds have a great noise cancelling system. I was also looking at the FlightCom Denali's. They are very light, which is a huge seller for me, but on the downside, the noise cancelling is a little below average.
Anyone with some feedback, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
