Career Questions

Post by ozone »

I am in my second year of the AMT program at Canadore. At the same time I am also working on my commercial with Algonquin Flight Centre. I have my PPL, Float, Night and trying to figure out what to do next. My plan is to finish my commercial, get 50 hours on floats and head out West or North and work as an AMT Apprentice/Pilot in the spring.

My question is should I do my IFR now or wait a while? I figure I won't be using it much initially which would mean spending more money to keep it current. The plus with IFR is the extra training and rating. The minus is maybe the employer will think that with my IFR I will get some hours, pack my bags and leave.

My other question is should I do my Multi now or later? I know I won't be flying multi initially and it isn't hard to get the rating in a short period of time when I need it.

Thanks in advance.

What are your career goals? This makes a big difference in the answer. I assume from your post you want to go airline eventually?

(This goes for just about everyone posting a question like this... try to include details like where you want to end up, what you want to fly, your goals/ambitions... it will help those offering advice to you. If you want to be a float driver for a career, there's no point in telling you to . bags for a charter op flying ho's)

Would like to start out float flying and maybe in the off season work as an apprentice and get my AME license. My dream is fire fighting and then down the road work up to the airlines. I guess it just depends on what falls into place.
