Need advice on Featherweight headsets (I know, sorry!)
Hi all! Hope everyone is slowly discovering the joys of the holiday season!
So I'm looking into the option of a featherweight headset for use in a Westwind 1124... So far I've found these two options:
http://www.marvgolden.com/headsets/aloftheadset.htm
http://www.marvgolden.com/headsets/lspeedmach1.htm
Can anyone comment? A/C specific input would be GREAT, but I'll listen to everyone's opinion.
The company has bought ANC headsets like the Bose X and the new DC's for the other flyers, but after a million years of wearing headsets I'm thinking about something a little lighter.
Thanks! Merci!

If it floats, flies, or giggles in bed - it's cheaper to rent then to own.
You want featherweight? Go with your first headset:

These will stay on during a LOT of +ve and -ve G. Incredibly good passive attenuation, but no ANR, so more bass gets through, which isn't good after 10 hours in the cockpit.

Do you find that low range noise has a big effect on fatigue, Hedley?
It seems that there are a lot of add-ons (for helicopter helmets especially) that will add passive attenuation, and some of the fling-wing guys are raving aabout them...but the odd individual says that they also have an ANR headset that they use for long flights.

Please don't tell my mother that I work in the Oilpatch...she still thinks that I'm the piano player at a whorehouse.
Does for me (shrug). If you're only gonna spend an hour in the cockpit, it probably doesn't make a difference, having ANR (which cuts out the low freqs - passive cuts out the high freqs).low range noise has a big effect on fatigue
However, if I do a LOT of flying (eg 10 hours) in one day, ANR makes a big difference to how tired/headachey I am at the end of the day. All depends upon the aircraft, and the ambient noise level, and frequency distribution/power spectral density of the noise, of course. A quiet aircraft won't need as good a headset as a noisy aircraft.
Probably the best all-round passive/active headset right now is this:

It's probably better than the Bose Series II ANR, which I flew with for around 1500 (?) hours, and was the benchmark of it's day.

Ok, copy what you're saying so far.
The a/c doesn't seem to have a ton of bass. In fact, it's quite comfortable even sitting in the back during cruise up to about 280Kts.
It's once you get to about 300kts it gets a little loud. Plus, most of our work will be done down low, so I assume it will be mostly wind noise at the shield.

I just picked up a Sennheiser (sp?) ANR unit (HMEC 25KAS) and so far found it to be good.
It's a little more bulky than the choices you listed, but you can still cock one of the earpiecs out of the way (either the left or right side) for use without the intercom. Even with both on and the ANR on you can still hear voices. I was using a Plantronics in-the-ear unit and found that at lower altitudes and higher speeds the wind noise was too much (only one earpiece mind you).
Hope it helps.

I have to agree that this is the quietest thing out there. Much more noise reduction than the BOSE even. I used to have one. Back when they still only came in a purple/white paint scheme (lame). It's quite light but its HUGE. Might as well be wearing a football helmet in the cockpit.Probably the best all-round passive/active headset right now is this:

I'm kind of interested in seeing where the superlights like Mach1 are going to end up in the future. I would love to just have some ear buds and a mike, but I hear that there are issues with the mike staying in place, and how understandable you are from other aircraft.
