Time for BANNED Camp.

Post by .80@410 »

Ok Moderators, this is for you.

To keep the quality of this board and maintain a certain level of post quality, it is time to start being a little more hard-ass with respect to TROLLS and IDIOTS. :x

We are getting numerous posts ( usually with post counts of 1-2 ) with titles such as "Woman should not fly" and " Sonic is taking over"

These people are wrecking what was once a decent forum.
In addition, there are some who are only here to provoke others and, far from stimulating, it just wrecks what was once a good thread.

Either more people need to be de-registered, banned or just plain cut off, or you will start losing true proffessionals browsing these forums. And, I don't want to hear "freedom of speech" cr@p either. If a user can't make a decent contribution in the first few posts, what makes you think he''s going to contribute later?

So, IMO<

If a new user immediately starts posting worthless threads, cut him off before this forum continues the current nosedive.

Perhaps not surprisingly, there is considerable discussion amongst moderators when posts arise that are questionable. Some, like the Woman post, are removed and discussed. Oftentimes, the originator of these post is asked to clean up their own posting. Sometimes we do it for them. Then, if the consensus of opinion is that the thread has some residual worth, it is re-introduced. Sadly, this time it was me who re-introduced it  I was also the one who yanked it originally and this last go-around too.

From time to time, we as moderators, fail. The use of PMs advising us of when we have is important.

Blocking of IPs or Forum Handles is the Prerogative of the Webmaster. Our powers are more akin to that of an editor. He has been pretty judicious in this respect, but in most cases it has been due to the vigilance of regular posters.

That having been said, thanks for keeping us on out toes, and I'll try not to screw up as much.

I had banned that user you are referring to and just recently (today) gave him a chance to return I guess he never learned the first time.

His access is once again blocked  .

In the future send me a private message on any post that you feel is in appropriate so that I or the other moderators can review it.

People laugh at us mods for not being 'in shape' when it comes to 'editing' all of the questionable posts. We go through a rigorous process to be a mod. It's no fun and games. Every 6 months we go through a series of test and evaluations.

First test is the "Turn the other cheek"
Purpose to this test is to gage how well you deal with insults and cyber 'biahtch slaps'
Image

Then there's the fitness test. ahramin wins this one hands down.
Image

Then there's the contriversial 'thickest head' test. I always win that one
Image

The cardio exam serves no purpose but AvCanada Admin seems to like it when he turns the speed up on us.
Image

The art of disguise
Image

NAVY S.E.A.L. techniques
Image

Last but NOT least...the 'Play Chicken' tests. Primarily used in internet arguments. You cannot teach this to anyone. You have to be born with this know-how on when to 'duck' from a bat the same way you would from a dumb nonsense argument on here. This one Capt Sweet & Juicy failed miserably thus he never did become a Mod. Even after 14 attempts at it.
Image

So next time folks a little understanding. We try to do the best job we can. Even if it kills us. (or gives us a concussion)

It's a very valid comment .80@410, IMHO. There are two forums that I frequent, this one, and the Professional Pilot Rumour Network (PPRUNE). While I feel that sometimes the moderators on the PPRUNE forum are a little too heavy handed, I agree that there is sometimes far too much garbage on this Forum, and it degrades the quality and does nothing to further the image of neither aviation in Canada nor our profession.

I respect the moderators for putting in their volunteer time to police this site, and as Birddog points out, they go through a lot to do this (thanks Birddog, for giving us an inside view). However I also agree with AvCanada that "community watch begins with you." In the few times that I have seen content that disturbs me a quick PM to one of the moderators has brought satisfactory results within hours. My only complaint, or rather suggestion, for "whistle blowing" is to have a single way to report a post of concern-- beit a single PM address for all moderators (rather than having to send a PM to each and every one) or the option of "Report this post to the moderator" like on other forums.

Moderators: What I think .80@410 and I are saying is don't be afraid to crack a few eggs to make a good omelet. Most of us want you to.

Birdog, I'm glad you guys have to pass that "Play Chicken" test! Though some threads start out as cr@p, and some deteriorate along the way, they often contain SOME worthwhile information, if you can make your way through them, weeding out the nonsense. Even some of the more notorious trolls make the odd worthwhile post. Keep up the good work!

I have an idea...........if you can tell that the post is a "troll", then don't read it. Don't click on it so the views don't rise.

It is like the radio and TV. Parents and the religous right piss and moan about the deplorable content coming over the airwaves. But if you don't like it.........

CHANGE THE FUCKING CHANNEL!

Seriously. If you know the post is bait, ignore it and it will go away! Kinda like a pesty sibling.

Actually, from what I've seen most moderators will disagree with that assessment 56BY111.

Forums are privately owned, open to public participation. They definately are not democracies per say. In fact, the owners have certain obligations and can be liable under certain circumstances.

Think of it as inviting some folks over to your house to a party-- they are your guests and can have a good time-- but there are limits (you decide how much of one) and even though it is just one of you and many of them, the trend of the party will not be dictated by popular consent! Guess who the police come to talk to if things get out of hand? Party crashers and vulgar types ruin it for everyone else.

Why are there bouncers at bars if the patrons should decide who says and who gets tossed???

Ref. Democracy: I stand corrected.
Let's all vote for a dictatorship.

What about the guy who gets taken out back and beaten for being rude to the ladies, throwing up on the carpet and generally just being an arrogant schmuk? Most groups won't tolerate that sort of behavior for long - albeit:

"CHANGE THE F*%$ING CHANNEL"

BTW - Congrats to all the Mods for passing the excruciating standards as outlined above.

What a ( IMO ) Stupid statement. Way to be pro-active. I bet you voted Liberal.
Maybe when the drug dealers take over my block , I'll move. And when I get an unjust ticket, I'll just pay it.

I don't HAVE to accept anything. Unlike people with that sort of f*ck -me-up-ass attitude, I would rather try and change things which offend me, or correct things that are wrong. :x

As for HO Driver,
I appreciate the support, but no- thanks RE: The moderator position..I have enough B*tch slappin goin on without having to do it on the computer as well.

As much as I hate the idiotic posts as well, isn't this more about freedom of speech? These posters have the right to say what they want, just like we have the right to complain about it or not read it at all.

I agree it should stop but moderators aren't here to sensor posts, unless they violate the rules of the board.

uuuuurrrrrchhhh... stop the brakes. Has the new PIC medevac job placed you on a pedastal where you can judge others and our mundane existance of trolling AvCanada? Sometimes the monotony of these threads need to be spiced up up some with things such as "Best wings in Canada" or "Darwinism". Sure, there are valuable threads where we argue the significance of rolling off of a runway with 9 or 10 passengers or slam pilot prostitutes for flying for free but at least I dont post "this is boring", "yawn" anytime CARS are brought up. Seems to me that many here could use a good hard pump and lighten up a bit......... now if that aint trolling, I don't know what is.

By the way, I thought this post was going to start something like "this one time at band camp........"

Regarding content, trolls and lame-ass posts, I don't feel that simply ignoring, or skipping over the offending thread is the right solution in the more offensive cases. No matter how many of us rise above responding and ignore the ignoramuses, somebody will still either take it seriously or drag it out or both. I feel that its about more than selecting which posts/threads I choose to read, its the fact that low-level posts often beget other low-level posts and eventually degrade the forum.

Regarding moderation solutions, I used to e-mail the grand chief directly, and still do on occasion. However the guy likely needs a break and has appointed several moderators to help keep tabs on the forums. I figure moderators are a little like politicians; you pick the one you feel will best represent the forum (and of course there the similarity ends... ;) ). If you've been on the forums for any length of time, its not hard to figure out the one(s) that are the most level headed, knowledgeable, fair etc. by monitoring their posts. Personally, I have never felt a need to e-mail more than one moderator with a complaint or request. If you picked the right one and your issues are valid, your chosen moderator should either take care of the matter, or at least respond satisfactorily to it.

My only criticism of the moderation system is that there seems to be a large volume of moderators for the general comments section. I just wonder if the less is more theory might not apply here. just a thought.

Cheers,
Snoopy

I don't touch posts unless they incite hatred, are totally moronic (like "sfdsfedfsd man I'm drunk buwhahaha rofl! OMG!") or someone makes a complaint about being named. Other than that, it's pretty much open to the poster to express whatever's on their mind.

This is a pilot forum. That being said, pilots aren't on duty all the time, so I don't think all posts have to be professional and upstanding. Where's the fun if we can't tell stories and lies in addition to discussing important issues?
