Ski flying season finally here in MB
Well the lakes around Southern MB are finally frozen enough for ski flying. It's easy to forget how much freedom a foot of snow and ice can offer. Albeit a wee bit colder than float season. Landing on a foot of smooth powder on a lake is like landing on a 'SERTA'. And the smooth crisp air makes the flying so much fun.
If we have to live in winterland...may as well enjoy it.

She's just barely an "A". She's a 57 and a good one. Mind you, I'm a bit partial to her so you can't trust my judgement! I'd like to tell you these were taken this year but, sadly, we don't have snow yet. These were taken last February in Western Quebec.Siddley Hawker wrote:Holy Shit that's a nice 180! When he sold Wheeler Airlines to Aircraft Industries, Tom Wheeler kept JPY as his private airplane.

Well, ski flying doesn't have to mean small and simple:Pratt wrote:Nice pics, reminds me of a much simpler and a very enjoyable time of my flying career. Not that I have a problem with what I am doing now.![]()

You do NOT want to get stuck in the slush with that one!

Yes that would be right up my alley!! Especially the JATO bottles, could have used them a few times.Blakey wrote:Well, ski flying doesn't have to mean small and simple:Pratt wrote:Nice pics, reminds me of a much simpler and a very enjoyable time of my flying career. The thin ice warning that Manitoba issued is:
This mostly applies to the City of Winnipeg and any area near flowing water outlets. For example most ice in Southern MB now is 8"-10" as for example the Red River near the Selkirk Float Base. And most lakes in the Nopiming and Whiteshell Park Areas. Even Dauphin Lake has plenty of ice.
Note a prohibition...just an advisory. The provincial government urges residents to stay off rivers and lakes in southern Manitoba despite the fact most water bodies appear to have frozen over. Manitoba Water Stewardship issued a thin ice advisory for the area yesterday, which is expected to remain in effect until mid-January.

Call Sudbury Aviation. In the winter they do training from day 1 in 172s on skis.ahramin wrote:A friend of mine is putting skis on his tricycle gear 190 HP C-150. Does anyone know where we can find some literature or guidance on operating a tricycle gear airplane with skis? Or post some info here?
Thanks

I don't think he needs skis. A helicopter rating might do.ahramin wrote:A friend of mine is putting skis on his tricycle gear 190 HP C-150. Does anyone know where we can find some literature or guidance on operating a tricycle gear airplane with skis? Or post some info here?
