after all the rat holes i have spent time in, Yellowknife is not bad at all. i mean, come on.....they have a real movie theatre....and you can't forget the strange range. they also have a nice english style pub....don't know whether the sushi restaurant is still open in the explorer hotel.. i hear it closed a while ago.
i agree that it is better than any of the places i have been to in northern Ont, Man, Que, or Sask! way better. plus, the northern lights are unbelievable. and you can't forget one of the best perks of YZF: there is a road out!

I know this may be a bit off-topic, ut how to whitehorse compare to yellowknife? My adventures in the territories have been limited to swamp spruce and muskeg.

Please don't tell my mother that I work in the Oilpatch...she still thinks that I'm the piano player at a whorehouse.
YXY vs YZF...
LOTS of differences.
There are many roads out of YXY
The economy in the Yukon sucks, ergo not as much flying. What IS there consists of basically one sched operator, a medevac/charter outfit and a few small charter operators (singles). Most work is in the summer and is tourist related. Oh there's also 1 1/2 flight schools (as I remember).
Whitehorse is VERY artsy. There are plays, concerts, galleries, organic food dealers, etc. It's pretty much like any other mountainy type town. Lots of granola crunchers, lots of German tourists, ya! Oh, and alternative ANYTHING. Also alot more.. same sex couples that YZF.
You have to admit that anyone that boasts of owning "the Yukon's oldest petrified pussy" has GOT to be out there!!
I almost forgot.... due to YXY's proximity to the ocean the wx is moderated a bit. -45 only lasts a week usually but the clag hangs in forEVER.

Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not,knows no release from the little things; knows not the livid loneliness of fear, nor mountain heights where bitter joy can hear the sound of wings.

Whitehorse is awesome, a nice town in a gorgeous setting, with a temperate climate for a northern town. Alas, the flying is almost non-existent, especially compared to the Knife. The flying out of the Kniife is mondo busy and most careers progress quickly, especially at an outfit like Tindi. And YZF although not as nice as the Horse sure beats most northern towns, the spunk hole YTH comes to mind. Hey Flybabe from one ex-knifer to another, do you miss it, some days I miss it huge.
If she floats, give er!
Too bad about the lack of flying jbs in YXY...I have a great-uncle there. That, and the mountain town blend of liberal redneck and neo-conservative hippie works well for me.

Arrow - damn right I miss it. If things weren't so tied up on my end I'd be back up there in a hurry.
Guy I knew at 7F once said "they may leave but they'll always be back".
Maybe not true for all but I guess I fell into that category.
The life I thought I wanted to live enlightened me to the life I should have kept living. Sigh.
Anyways short answer, yes

Armstrong=Armpit
Dryden=Dryhump or Dryhole
Toronto=Teranna
Vancouver=Vanquvahr
Winnipeg-The Peg
Niagara Falls=Viagra Balls
or the 'Knife.

Ah I've been trying to cut back on "four post wonders" in the last few months. Not like you're going extinct or anything. I do appreciate the attention as always, especially from the little people.Daart wrote:Man, took you long enough, I was worried there for a bit. In the end though you were like a big fat trout that couldn't resist the lure.
Hey Corn-shoot, I find your posts are quite good and you are a positive contributor to this board, but why the negative remarks towards YZF. I, as well as many others spent the best years of our young lives there flying the bush before moving on to bigger, higher, and faster. Not looking for an argument, just curious is all.
Cheers

if you knew me personally, you'd know that No disrespect was intended. I know that some of our best aviators got their break in that fair city, I just hate to see young'ens sit up there and rot away. That's the part that makes me bitter, I hate to see completely useful human beings get beaten up in the great white north in the name of the goddess that is aviation.
I respect you for being able to break through up there, but just don't forget our many fallen comrades
Very true, when I was there you couldn't go to a grocery store, hardware store or whatever without bumping into some young bucks waiting for their first aviation job. Wonder how many just gave up altogether. I know there were many days when I wanted to say piss on this, especially when some drunk in the back of the taxi I was driving wanted to be a jerk, lived up there for nearly a year and a half before getting a ramp job. Your point is well taken.

Hit the NWT border in 1987, and left in 1998 after stints in YSM, YHY, YZF (7 years) and YFB. Oh, by the way I remember taxing by a yellow Twotter on the East Bay in the mid to late 90's and seeing a young blond girl on the wing checking oils. The Flybabe perhaps?
