It is no ice strip I think; it is one of these raised dirtstrips, high over the tundra, I think
I tried to find carat lake on Google maps and Google earth but all I got were links to diamond mine companies... linking to their offices in Toronto!
carat Lake is in Nunavut territory
Have added some stuff on the mine there on my page

Am sure Buffalo Joe will retrieve the aircraft, either for spares use or for rebuild at some point in time. I think he will scratch his ear more about what this incident will do to his reputation as a company...

I doubt it is ice. I landed in Carat many years ago on dirt or gravel. The memory is vague(show N66° and W111°28 in my logbook). I've been to a few ice strips but never seen an ice strip with a dropoff like that.

The Runway at Carat is located at N6601 W11127. The strip was 3100' long, but was lengthened to around 4000' before this incident occurred. The winter ice road will connect the mine with Yellowknife some time in January. The mine will receive its yearly supply of fuel and other operating materials through this road for approximately six weeks.

Carat Lake
Ya the strip that PSH went off of is a gravel strip that was lengthened to 4100'. its NOT an ice strip. Its where all the freight for the Jericho diamond mine is flown to. This mine is in production and is operated by the Tahera Diamond Corp. Based in the Soctia tower on bay st in downtown YYZ i belive.
So NO, joe's DC4 will not sink in 3 months. Dream on.
Im watining for Taheras stock to rise... but will it? who knows.

By my estimate they have an incident about every 6 months. Allot of them are covered up quickly and never get reported. For example they had two runway “excursions” at the Diavik mine site but TC only knows about one.
As far as putting this plane back in the air. Anyone that says it can’t be done doesn’t know Joe to well. This guy has become famous . . .infamous for resurrecting written off aircraft. If I was a betting man I would definitely put money down that this plane will fly again and given good enough odds I’d even lay some down that Joe would fly it from its current site.

Those are some wild pictures. I would not count the Buffalo guys out on this one. PSH has a long history as being the old reliable so I can't see Buffalo just writing her off. They have an amazing knack for making something from nothing, my dollar says she'll fly again!
Son, Your gonna have to make your mind up about growing up and becoming a pilot.. You can't do both!!

Force 9 we had and considerable delays at the airport
The good thing is I was had home, have to work in the weekend when thing spromise to be more quiet
No doubt we'll have our share of tec delays
No winter here and while I don't envy the winters in Canada, it might be nice to have a bit of frost and snow once in a while...
Propliners here (Holland) are hybernating as most are operated by preservation groups; am looking forward to the spring (but maybe we ar ekneedeep in snow then, the climate is really out of whack...)
take care!

Hey grimey,
I was just up in yellowknife and was talking to the gang at buffalo the other day. As soon as the weather gets better, she will be repaired and brought home. That old girl has a long story behind her and they are not about to let it die there. That DC-4 was in on the berlin airlift all those years ago. She'll be flying by summer my dollar says anyways. Gotta love that old iron those guys got, back when planes were planes and pilots actually flew them, instead of pushin buttons.

With no "summon the FA for java" button, a plane's not worth flying.electraguy wrote:..... back when planes were planes and pilots actually flew them, instead of pushin buttons.
Everything comes in threes....
