Expat, thats a perfect example of how the Liberals fooled the masses. If that rifle was registered and painted floresant orange it not have prevented this disaster. Who leaves a loaded gun around the house? The Liberals used the Quebec incident to spearhead this entire idea. No one is advocating the removal of gun contol, we have always had the best gun control in the world. There are people that are too stupid to drive a car. You see them everyday on the news, especially when there are poor weather conditions. These people are trained and tested before they are allowed on the roads but they still kill thousands every year. People are educated and constantly reminded of the dangers of tobacco use but if you drive by a high school how many of our brightest young people are standing out smoking. Why do you expect the government to protect you from your own stupidity? You have to take some responsibility for your own actions. How many people die every week due to bad driving? Due to smoking related diseases? Its so far beyond gun related deaths that its impossible to put in words. People don't want to hear about all those thousands but one gun death makes great headlines. Over a hundred posts on this thread and you come up with that!!!!! What a waste of time its been banging on this keyboard. The topic still is " we are about to have a lynching in this great country" Would you like to be involved in trying to stop it or shall we all sit back like when they sentenced young Truscott to hang in his early teens and now look back and say " how did we let that happen" Sometimes to be a good citizen you mush stand against your government.
Niss, I'm assuming that your reference to Sask and northern Ont would mean we all leave loaded weapons around the house. How easy it is to point out bigotry in another person and not see it in yourself. Thats alright I dish it out and I can take it. I guess you could call it painting everyone with the same brush. Don't feel bad I've been accused of it too. I'm still waiting for a comeback on my comments on Anne Frank. Should all young peoples thoughts ideas and observations be disregarded simply because of age.

Actually thats not what I was getting at, at all. My pointing out the geographical similaraties was only to point out that while there are many responsible gun owners up north there are still those who dont play by the rules. I was just trying to show you that this:
And your Anne Frank comparison isnt apt IMHO because no body wrote the diary for her and then put her name on it. This is her first person account of what happened. While young Katie may share her dads sentiment, this propaganda is not her own, she was put up to it. She is merely an actor in this whole thing.
isn't always true.We have never had a problem with firearms. There is the very rare shooting or suicide but nothing will ever change that. People where expected to handle their weapons with safety and respect, which they did.

Nothing wrong with gun control. We have had gun control for decades. The problem is the registry. The Liberal gun registry does nothing to prevent this sort of thing from happening. If the gun had been locked up with a trigger lock and secured in a gun cabinet this could not have happened. However all the anti gun heros are going to use this tragedy to fuel their own political and finacial gain.Expat wrote:Things like that make you want to have gun control!

No the registry did not prevent this from happening, this was the result of an irresponsible gun owner who had no respect for the laws.
Gun owners, please enlighten me as to what is in store for this man? Should he be allowed to own a weapon again? Should he be fined/jailed? Is him being responsible for his daughters death enough punishment for him? Should the daughter have been allowed to carry a gun to prevent this? What do you think?
I'm serious (except for the daughter packing part) what would be a suibtable punishment? It was an accident, but why was the sun carrying a loaded unlocked/unsafetied weapon around the house?
IMHO this man has a death on his hands.....there is almost no line between who is responsible for his death, the son accidentally shot, the father was responsible for the unsafe firearm in his sons arms.

Kill some one driving drunk and they take away your car, and don't let you drive (or at least they should!!!). Carelessly store a firearm, I suggest the punishment should be similar. Not only should his guns be taken away, but he should not be allowed to handle one again. His daughters death is enough punishment, no jail time is needed, he knows what he did wrong, however, he has proven he is incapable of being responsible with firearms, so he can't have them. That's not punishment, it's protecting the rest of society.

Dyslexics of the world... UNTIE!
The questions that need to be answered with this girl getting shot are, what was a 14 year old doing unsupervised with a loaded gun? How did he manage to get his hands on the gun, action, and ammo?
If it's a matter of the parent(s) not properly storing the weapon, they should be charged criminally and be made an example of in the interest of general deterence. It's simply not good enough to say they have to live with the consequences of their irresponsible behaviour and disregard for the law that resulted in their daughter's death. Preventing this type of tragedy is one of the main reasons behind our gun handling and storage laws. If people don't get charged for violating them in this most severe example, there is no point to them being on the books. Everyone whose violation of the law has lead to injury or death of others has to "live with the consequences." So what! Part of the consequences they live with also needs to include sanctions imposed by our justice system.

The problem is bigger than the registry. The government wants you to have their permission to defend yourself. You have to natural right to protect yourself, they want you to do it with a stick. Do bodyguards for the rich and wealthy use sticks? One of the biggest leftys, Michael Moore had his team arrested for illegal weapons at an airport in the states. Yet they still call his films documentarys.

No the gov't doesnt want your permission to defend yourselfs, but they want to make sure that not every gun totin yahoo is dealin out justice texas style. Nobody should be carrying a gun everywhere they go just "in case". If you are paranoid enough that you think you need your gun everywhere you go then what is going to stop someone from squeezing one off everytime they see a shadow move....it happens. The problem is bigger than the registry. IMHO the only thing more dangerous than the occasional armed assailant is the permenantly armed society.

Well niss, we are finally starting to agree. This crime is clearly defined. The laws to prevent this tragedy are understood by every licenced gun owner. Your knowledge of the laws and safe handling of firearms are tested before you are issued a licence. Your criminal and social back ground is also checked. The punishment is also detailed like any other crime. This has all been supported by responsible gun owners. The gun registery has absolutly nothing to do with any of this. Its horrendously expensive and accomplishes absolutly nothing. My reference to Anne Frank is merely this. Before anyone listened to the message behind Katey's video her credibility was attacked without anyone knowing a thing about her maturity. She was labeled a pawn of the gun crowd with no evidence whatsoever. Young people have vivid imaginations. Maybe Anne Frank dreamed up most of what she wrote, who knows. One way or another the message was delivered and the world is probably a better place. Just as was the message in this video. Every one agrees there must be gun laws, just like highway laws, alcohol laws, assault laws and all the others. There should also be laws that protect the citizens from being brutalized by their government and thats what we are talking about here.

There are people out there, whether, mentally ill, incompetent, or just plain stupid that shouldn’t be allowed to own a gun. The gun registration somewhat regulates it. I understand people can always find ways to get things illegally, but the gun registration limits the number out there. Heck if it was so easy to get a gun maybe I should buy one myself just for kicks. Sure the registry is a little flawed, is that the only argument of 13 yr old? Well big deal.
The only other nugget I got from the vid, was that hanging myself would be a really awful way to die. So I better shoot myself instead.

No problem with kids learning how to shoot, but perhaps start small with air rifles, then .22, then when they are big enough to not get thrown across the field some bigger stuff.
Do you figure that kid was his son or nephew or both?

Morav, now i'm beginning to understand why some species eat their own young. Are you too mentally ill, incompetent or just plain stupid to read the post above you. The licencing proccess does everything you just mentioned. This is fully supported by the gun owning population. Registering does absolutly nothing. How many goddamned times do you have to hear it. If you wish to own a firearm you must pass the training and examinations to get a permit. Do not attempt this, you will not make it.

Registering firearms has nothing to do with weeding out people. The Possession and Aquisition licence (formerly FAC) does it with background checks. I remember getting my first FAC in 1983 when I was 16, long before C-68 and the Firearms Registry. Knowing how many and what types of firearms is irrelevant in that instance.
By the way, did you know that it is perfectly legal for me to "lend" a non-restricted firearm to another person who has a PAL, or POL in another location (Province). I can ship it Canada Post and not have to declare it as a firearm. That person picks it up and can legally store it in his/her location (properly secured). The Police would then have no idea that a firearm is in a new location, and it is all perfectly legal.
I am all for safety and respondsibility, but not for wasting money on a concept thrown together as a knee jerk reaction, without thoughtfully thinking it through.

To everyone out there. If you were given two billion dollars to combat gun crime, how would you invest it? Keep in mind this is your own tax dollars we are talking about. If you say " I'd register all the hunting rifles owned by the law abiding citizens of Canada". Then I can only assume you are either retarded or an aspiring Liberal about to run for office.
Ok Morav, I'm glad you are amused, I've been trying to keep it that way, also somewhat confrontational. This is one of the longest running threads so far on this site. You'll have to go back and read a few opinions on why. You will see my redneck, don't trust the government conficating opinionalso Liberal hype scare the people into voting for us opinion and the always amusing Liberal if you want gun laws I'll give you gun laws opinion. Read all the posts, you'll see gigotry, paranoia, redneckism, noth hates south, south thinks north are hicks, we've covered it all. One of my alltime best sayings is " nothing ruins a good story like hearing the other side" This can apply to almost every facet of life. Sorry I went off on you but I'm just about to go out to my garage and hang myself while shooting my registered gun into my mouth.
This is exactly what the creators of the registry wanted the public to think. The gun registry is such a phenomenal waste of taxpayer money, it elicits a gag reflex each time I hear about it! Taxpayers should be fuming about this gross waste of money! Forget the sponsorship scandal, this is a mother load of political incompetence.I was lead to believe that the gun registration is what weeds people out.
Sorry about the spelling, that was supposed to say bigotry, not gigotry, and a couple of others. We have also covered queers, Jews, Hitler, WW2, Vikings, global warming, Alan Rock and everthing the Liberals have done to us. I'm going to settle down now and go look at some porn. Everything seems to make more sense after that.
I partially agree. Only if the courts back LE. Policing is more reactive than proactive. Have 1000 cops on the street and the drug deal still goes down on the vacant corner and the shots fired are still up no-name alley. If the courts backed LE and we could start hanging people for violent gun crimes then dont you think people would maybe consider if it's all worth having the facets in their neck fractured like a chickens wishbone.NWONT wrote: puting all that tax revenue into more officers, newer cars and the newest crime fighting technology would make a considerable difference. A simply approach: the crime committed should match the consequences faced. Without some equality why would criminals stop

Sure are a lot of Sherlock Holmes out there, but they don't have much information. Did the kid grab a loaded gun, was he loading it at the time, or was it unloaded and he was loading it?
He should never have been doing it in the house. Maybe he was stoned.
What good would a gun registry do here?
Maybe he cut the safety off the gun. Maybe he brought the gun into the house from a friend's place. Maybe he took it from a police car.
Laws don't prevent anything. Compliance is what makes us a civilized society.
There are more people killed by automobiles than guns. More auto deaths are caused by sober people than drunks.
People @#$! up. With guns, knives, gasoline, autos, horses, snowmobiles, skis, boats, airplanes (oh oh, sacred ground), javelins, and on and on.
I'm working on a cure for stupidity. Looks like we're going to have to ban childbirth.
