Pilot Dies In-Flight; Co-Pilot Lands Jet
McALLEN, Texas — The pilot of a Continental Airlines flight became ill after takeoff and was later pronounced dead after the plane made an emergency landing Saturday, a company spokeswoman said.
The 210 passengers on the flight, which departed from Houston, were never in danger and the co-pilot landed the plane safely, Continental spokeswoman Macky Osorio said.
The airline said only that the pilot suffered a "serious medical problem." Continental believes the pilot died of natural causes, Osorio said. The pilot's name was not released.
The flight, bound for Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, took off from Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport and was diverted to McAllen-Miller International Airport. The flight continued to Mexico with a new crew, Osorio said.

3 step SOP's for pilot incapacitation...
1. Engage Auto pilot. A/C control is paramount.
2. Ask for assistance in removing the pilot from the controls. 'Get this guy out of my Seat'
3. Hit the clock. Now you're logging PIC time

I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming in terror like his passengers...
Death is God's way of telling you to slow down. Some of these senior guys commanding these a/c, often under horrendous stress loads, coupled with a sedentary life style, it is surprising to me that we don't see more of this happen. Medicals or not, a kfc captain in ylw was found dead in the cockpit of a 580 a few years ago while doing his preflight, anyone can spontaneously croak with no detectable symptoms of disease, anytime. These came's who presume that they can take one look at someone and determine the state of their health, with very little empirical information or family info, or sit and make prognostications about a candidates potential lifespan (+ or -) based on next to no info, are a joke.
Funny we read these stories after hearing things like this:

Former pilot fights for right to fly past age 60
A former Air Canada pilot who alleges he was discriminated against because he had to retire at age 60 was expected to present his case before the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal on Monday.
The world is wicked i tell ya.

So the FO really earned his pay that day, even though it was lower than the new-hire attendant in the back.

I doubt it. Continental new hire F/A wages are $18 / block hour, and with the new contract equating to almost 2 duty hours for every block hour, that equates to about $9 an hour. If you're based in New York like most of the new hires, good luck living on $9/hour.aileron wrote:So the FO really earned his pay that day, even though it was lower than the new-hire attendant in the back.
