Sorry, I didn't realize that ex-rampies, who may now be pilots, were excluded from your survey. I assume that this means you harbor no wish to become one yourself?

Actually I was a pilot and am now making more money as a rampie, not to mention I live where I want, or that I have a set schedual, or the fact that that I have every weekend off. I never haver to deal with shitty weather, but I do have to deal with angry pilots. As for the Idea of going back to being a pilot, find me a job that is starting at 60k a year on a set schedual, that I have everyweekend off, your right I might want to get back into flying, in the mean time, I am happy where I am at.

#1 wear earplugs
#2 you seem to forget that the ones flying the planes are your customers too, not just the people getting off, whether or not we have passengers is beside the point, you run an FBO which means you are a full service provider
#3 how do you possibly know what is going on behind the scenes, as you know things change every minute in the charter world, we will go when we go and maybe we dont know how much fuel we need until the last minute, and maybe it is only 50liters, your job is to fuel the plane no matter how much we ask for
#4 maybe you need a little advice
#5 giving my 2 cents because again somone(not everyone)is making uneducated assumptions on certain actions by pilots

We are not all perfect nor are the rampies, all in all I find the services in Alberta pretty good. Just remember that if you see a pilot doing something that you feel may be out of the ordinary for you, it may not be for us.

Last time I checked most rampies get paid by the hour ?

8 mins !?! My god...no wonder you would walk away from your responsibilities. It takes my bird 3 mins to get pressures up and do a system check....add 5 mins for the comp to boot and self test....8 mins...and thats if nothing goes wrong. If we have issues it could take us up to an hour to make a go/no go descision. 8 mins is nothing to complain about, especially if your GETTING PAID. If things look like they are going to take a while...sure I'll wave somone off...but lets be realistic...systems take time to boot and pilots need a few mins to run a few checklists.

....besides if rampies are making 60k....bite the damn pillow and smile.

Can you not start the initialization of your FMC a couple of miutes prior to start? As for 8 minutes just to see the pressures go up? what are you flying?

I just think waiting 8 minutes after both engines have started is too long. If you are not that organized..wave them off.

Are you sitting in the plane?!?! WTF an hour! If you are in the the aircraft, taking an hour to make a go/nogo decision, with the rampie standing by, I dont know where to begin! Incredible!

By your posts you seem to have an air of superiority over these fellows. Perhaps by thinking outside of the box you may realize that they may have other jobs that need attending to. Like fueling other aircraft, loading the fuel truck., etc, etc. All I was saying is once both engines are started and no hazzards exist (hitting something on the taxi out) why not wave them off so they can do something more important than just stand there?

IMHO of course.

double-j :

You are not suggesting that pilots should be able to start their engines and leave a parking spot without ground crew helping them are you?

I guess all I was saying is that you are in a position where there are no hazzards (e.g. taxi straight out, no aircraft, obstructions, etc), both pilots can see, you can wave the guy off and taxi out.

Having said all that, It has been awhile since I have used FBO's and I am coming across all self righteous! In my position we always have designated rampies and are always clear of any hazzards and on a
taxi line when I wave them off. Apples and oranges I guess.

Anyhoo, LIR, sorry for my little rant there, Im not in your position, therefore I have no buisness commenting on your airmenship!

cheers!

No offence taken JJ. I can completely understand the frustration of sitting there freezing your apples off while some guy in a warm cabin is screwing around. I have 0 superiority over anyone...I couldn't get my plane off the ground if it wasn't for the team effort of crew and ramp staff. I'm the guy who handed out the beers to ramp staff at Christmas for all the help. I would have given a case to all the ramp staff if I could afford to, not just the ones who showed up that day.

The long waits we have to endure often come from pax or electronic equipment. If we are aware of a problem, ramp staff are given the "tnx alot" and are more than free to leave...but to see someone complain about having to wait and do their job over 8 mins while we try to figure out how long this will take to sort out seems a little silly. If I didn't like my job, I'd find another...not complain here about having to do it.....lol, who am I kidding...I'd bitch too

As for this thread getting jacked by pilots...don't you want to hear the other side of the story ? If you didn't, why not just sit in the lunch room and bitch there ? Maybe you'll gain some understanding of what the people you work so closely with have to deal with as well ? Good service comes from those who understand what people are dealing with and need... tips and gratitude usually follow.

Top of the day to all the rampies out there. Thanks for your help.

Thank you that is all that we ask.

All that I am saying is that I am sure that all the pilots out there love to hear an old pilot tell them how they used to do it and how much better it was that way

Sinjin, are you an old pilot? I only ask because once I got that first elusive job/break, I couldn't imagine doing anything else. How long did it take you to realize it wasn't for you? This isn't an attack either, I am honestly curious.

Pilot/fueller,Sorry but I need the side job.Still makes me sick that I get more working for the fbo than I do flying.Being on both sides of the window gives me respect for both.It still seems to get the guys who walk off the plane with a mechanical problem and I trouble shoot it with them!!!

I work on the ramp for an airline (not an fbo). My biggest complaint are the diva pilots, and the guys who have been flying as a f/o on a 'ho for 5 months and now think they are God. No I will not bow down to you. After you have 10,000 hours then you can act like a diva.
Another thing that annoys me are pilots who bring up their duty time. I am the lowest person on the totem poll. I turn airplanes as quickly as I can. I do not dispatch crews or planes or am allowed to make decisions. If you have a problem with duty time then tell someone who can do something about it!! I ain't that person! I have other work to do.

On the other hand I really appreciate the pilots who are pleasant. I will go out of my way to help you out with special requests or just doing all possible to make the turn as smooth and fast. Also pilots who help unload bags always gets good marks in my books. We both know you don't have to help if you don't want to, but thanks!
