i find it annoying when pilots use the "C-" in their registration when calling up ATC. what is up with this? it seems private pilots do this a lot.

Must just be in your area. One person must have started a trend.

Just so I'm clear, are they reading C-GABC as, "Charlie Golf Alpha..." or are you saying they're reading the hyphen as well, as in "Charlie hyphen Golf Alpha..." or something ridiculous like that?

If they are doing the former, there is no violation of procedure. It is encouraged to use your full call sign for initial contact with ATC and then continue with whatever ATC answers with.

That's awsome. If I heard someone say that I'd buy them a beer.

It's better to break ground and head into the wind than to break wind and head into the ground.

No, it is not.

I suppose if you were really, really bored, you could do what the AIM says to do:

http://www.tc.gc.ca/CivilAviation/publi ... -0.htm#5-8
Canadian Private Civil Registration and Canadian or Foreign Carriers Without an Assigned Call Sign

(a) Initial contact: The manufacturer’s name or the type of aircraft, followed by the last four letters of the registration.

Examples:

Cessna GADT (CESSNA GOLF ALFA DELTA TANGO)
Aztec-FADT (AZTEC FOXTROT ALFA DELTA TANGO)

NOTE: The words helicopter, glider or ultralight are an acceptable substitute to the type of aircraft.

(b) Subsequent communications may be abbreviated to the last three letters of the registration, if this abbreviation is initiated by ATS.

Examples:

Cessna GADT becomes “ADT” (ALFA DELTA TANGO) Aztec-FADT becomes “ADT” (ALFA DELTA TANGO)

Foreign Private Civil Registration:

(a) Initial contact: The manufacturer’s name or the type of aircraft, followed by the full aircraft registration.

Example:

Mooney-N6920K (expressed: MOONEY NOVEMBER SIX NINE TWO ZERO KILO).

(b) Subsequent communications may be abbreviated to the last three characters of the registration if initiated by ATS.

Example:

Mooney-N6920K becomes 20K

(expressed: TWO ZERO KILO).

I've been guilty of this. My company uses our reg. instead of our callsign. So when flying down in the States you get into the habit of including the "C" as part of the registration. I'll catch myself including the "C" sometimes after comming back onto a Canadian Freq. That's life... no big deal.

exactly. for those of us that spend large amounts of time overseas in a c reg'd aircraft, it becomes force of habit. omitting the "Charlie" would actually eat up more air time with the uncertain pause at the beginning.

There's a lot more terrible radio habits that cause much more misunderstanding and inconvenience than this trivial matter.

Thank you wallypilot.

Your aircraft call sign starts with a C so say it on initial contact along with a G, F, or I and omit it (or them) in subsequent transmissions. Find something better to nitpick!
