Yeah, I heard the same thing, Carson air and Integra have taken over the majority of the bag run that alta was doing. I heard that they are doing a major downsizing of their calgary base and layoffs of pilots, mechanics, and support staff is on the way. That really sucks, I know a few people there who are pretty kewl. Keep yer chins up boyz (and girls) you will be going to better places !!!
I wouldn't start jumping to extremes just yet. They are trying to wash their hands of the bag run which is why carson and integra are taking over some of the runs. I can't really say I blame them since it seemed like a money losing venture from the beginning, although I wish carson and integra the best of luck with it. You can't hold it against a company for trying to stream line their operation and focus more on profitable flights. As for lay-offs from what I've heard Alta-Flights has been pretty good in the past for trying their best to keep their employees, even though they might move them onto another aircraft or base.

Butterz is right!!
As far as I know Alta has been trying to dump-off the Bag-Run for the last year or so, and it sounds like they have found a couple of companies (Carson & Integra) that want to give it a shot!
Remember, before the Bag-Run Alta. was one of Canada's largest and most successful charter companies. I think they hit their peak in 2002 with 40 or so aircraft and about 80 pilots! They also had a very impressive client list. Today Alta's down to maybe 20 planes and 40 pilots, and their client list is has shrunk as well!
My gut feeling is that Alta is passing-off the the Bag-Run, which sadly means the grounding of their Bag-Run planes and layoffs. Hopefully they will re-focus on the charter/crew-change game (what brought them their success back in the day) and bring back the laid-off pilots this fall when busy-season kicks in!

Mav and Goose,
It doesn't really make sense to me why you would want an entire company to go under and have XX amount of pilots without jobs instead of X amount that were layed off. I don't know of too many companies that haven't laid off any pilots in the last 2 years, and there are always some that aren't happy at some point. While it would be great to work someplace were no one ever wanted to leave, these companies are few and far between. Training bonds unfortunately seem to be spreading to more and more companies as training costs skyrocket and newly PPC'd pilots take-off to other companies. I think that alot of us have brought this on ourselves, at least the ones that take a month old PPC somewhere else.

The PPC is just another example of TC finding another rule to bring aviation further into the realm where owners and pilots lose more money for no real improvement in safety.

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

for those of you not familiar with Alta's biz,
the metros are always for sale. That is half of their business, refurbing metros and then lease/sales. Most have gone overseas. I doubt Perim is about to purchase any
Doing their best to keep their people happy? Thats a big BULLSH*T.
Maybe back when J.Dubbleya was in house, and before he shouldered the summer of 2002 collapse

I know some guys that are up at the YEG base and from what I heard they seem to be fairly busy. Downsizing the YYC base and moving some a/c, crew, and mechanics up there for the busy season makes sense to me. I don't know where the idea came from that everyone there is happy, I was trying to find it on this thread and no joy, so stop shouting "in with it".

I don't know what happened to JW but he was probably one of the nicest guys I've met in aviation. I hope he's gone on to greener pastures!
Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not, knows no release from the little things; knows not the livid loneliness of fear, nor mountain heights where bitter joy can hear the sound of wings.

The sky is falling , The sky is falling!!!
There are some people out there who get a kick out of pressing the panic button and creating a whole bunch of Bullshit for a lot of good people. You can't help but wonder what would happen to them if they ever had a real a/c emergency, I suspect they would like faint.
I do wish some of these people would stay at home and off the net.

"in with it",
I, personally no longer work there, but I know alot of good people that do. I never said everyone there was happy, and your probably right that most are fairly fed up with it all. I do know that they are trying their best to play the hand they are dealt and at least hope for better things to come. You can't hold that against them and claim they are all knob polishers, a lot of them have worked very hard to get to where they are. All I wanted to say in the first place was that I don't want to see the company go under, and I don't think they will, though they will probably be a lot smaller.

Which runs did Integra and Carson get? Is Integra running the pistons and Carson the turbines? And grenwich pointed out earlier that Alta was a great company before the bag runs. How does a bag run bring a company down, unless it was the fact that they underbid it so much that even they knew that they weren't going to turn a profit. UPS, FEDEX, PUROLATOR are all bag runs, if you will, and they all seem to do quite well.
