YHZ re-named in honour of Robert L Stanfield

Post by Rebel »

Halifax International Airport re-named in honour of Robert L. Stanfield. Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the renaming of Halifax International Airport to Halifax Robert L. Stanfield International Airport on Friday. The new name proclaimed is effective immediately. “Today’s renaming is a fitting tribute to a great Nova Scotian and a great Canadian, a man who will always be recognized as one of this province’s finest leaders and, as we all know, the best Prime Minister Canada never had,” said the Prime Minister.

Robert L. Stanfield was first elected to the Nova Scotia Legislature as a member in 1949. He was premier of the province from 1956 until 1967. Mr. Stanfield served as leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition in the House of Commons from 1967 until 1976.

Well........ thanks for the history lesson from somebody who was around that time of the 1968"Trudeaumania" and watched Stanfield get trounced by that guy who wore sandals, drove around in a Mercedes 2 seater convertible in tow with some good looking sweeties, and whose claim to fame was” the state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation”. Quite a revealing statement in 1967 the “Summer of Love”…………. I remember those days well!!!

If you remember the sixties, you weren't there - Grace Slick

Trudeamania? Have a review of historical election returns during the era: Trudeau never polled a majority of the electorate.

.

Nope, he never did, but he won three majority covernments(1968, 1974 & 1980) and one minority(1972). There is a big difference in polling and winning.

" Go ask Alice".............

And we've been paying for it ever since.

I still remember a T-shirt I had with a vulture on a tree branch and a noose below, with the words, "Trudeau: Come West."

lol Good one! Except at least that abomination (Mo)lester Pearson, is located in that other abomination called the GTA, so it at least makes a shred of sense to call it a "Toronto" airport...maybe if Halifax had the population of Southern Ontario I wouldn't laugh at it building their airport 40km out of town...if you're going to try and make a funny comeback at least draw a decent parallel...

I believe the criteria used to locate the YHZ airport was to choose the location with the most fog per annum...ah well, for an "International" airport it was always a great place to practice localiser approaches!
