mercenary pilots
Just curious. Where are mercenary pilots working these days? DR Congo? Somalia? Central America? Anybody know?

I think he means merc's. I think they all work for the cia doing stuff like renditions, i.e., dropping poor beggars from places like gitmo in countries, and I mean any country, anywhere, that are willing to dissappear them. You would have to be a merc at heart to do that stuff, regardless of who signs your paycheque.
Your best bet would be to google merc's and find one of their forums.
Executive Outcomes(one of the former bigger operators) didn't have an aviation department. I'm guessing the guerrillas/gov't/mercenary agencies charter out.
I think you might be thinking of drug/weapon smugglers("lord of war")??
and if you're thinking of "Air America" type of "mercenary" type deals, it's all governmental agencies, and you'll have a tough time getting in.

I was curious about merc flying as I have been doing more reading about current events lately. If someone wanted to, I think he could just go to a war-tone area like DR Congo or Somalia and offer his services as a merc pilot to a militia or a government. That is my impression.

The governments don't need pilots, they need equipment, if you brought your own gunship(huey's/Mi-8's), or herc, maybe they'll take you.
I don't think a 172 will cut it either, they need transports, and a few helicopters, all of which they aquire from the russians for dirt cheap and the equipment is crewed.
Also, I don't think you'll be able to log the time, or you can "log it" but i'm not sure who will hire you on your word that you were flying Ilyushin XXX's.. In a war torn part of africa for the rebels or for the government.
Don't go to those parts of the world offering your services... Go to a reputable merc company and apply. Or a reputable logistics company, dyncorp, l3 and apply, and maybe they'll give you a shady job...

I talked to one guy who got his instrument rating at Pro IFR a while ago. He flew a Caravan in Kenya. He said that he knows some pilots that flew light twins in the DR Congo and that militias had offered them money to transport troops and supplies. My impression was that they did not accept the job.
