Know a few guys that have gone over, and a bunch more that are looking at going. Looked at it myself. They all seem to like it, some even commute from places outside of Japan. The time off is good but as I am sure you gathered Japan is expensive but your allowances do cover it pretty well. It is a very structued style of flying and the training takes a hell of a long time. Although it is a little expensive you can walk away with some pretty nice coin at the end of the three years, especially with the end of year payouts. The medical is insane so start preparing well before you go, you would not believe the amount of people that fail it. This might be a bit late because their latest interviews just finished, but they screen about every three months so not sure if you went to this set.
I gathered lots of info throughout the years. It is something that I might do someday on the B-767. But I can tell you that the Dash-8 job is based in Osaka. Itami airport is located in Toyonaka City, a subburb of Osaka. It`s about 25 minutes from downtown Umeda station by Hankyu railway wich is very comfortable! That said, in Toyonaka, the price for appartments is not as expensive as in Tokyo or Osaka. It is very comparable to Toronto. So you will be making money out of your monthly allowance for appartment. Also, they give you around 1000 USD per month to commute to where you come from. That, you might be able to save too if your family is with you.But remember on the interview that this contract is based on the fact that you will commute, that is what you have to tell your japanese interviewers! Also, yes the medical is the big deal with the JCAB licence. Compare to ours, you have to be an astronaut to fly a Dash-8! Keep in mind that the maximum alowable body-mass index is 27. So you have to be thin! And unless you have jet-time, you will never fly ANA on a jet. Your only progress opportunity, might be at the end of the contract, to be promotted as captain. And be ready to work like 6 days on,2 days off for 5 weeks, then 12 days off. So you will work a lot! But you will make good money. The japanese tax system for that rang of salary is about 20%. Finally the destinations are, Itami, Kochi, matsuyama. But you will probably be doing Osaka(Itami) to Kochi ,about 30 minutes away five times a day. then you finish your day right after lunch time, you overnight in Kochi. Then the next morning, you do the same thing but you over-night in Osaka. Finally, if you have an interest for japanese culture and people, you might find the experience good. Otherwise, if you just go for the bucks, you might get frustrated especially if you are a f/o! Saa...Gambatte! MajorKong

Sounds accurate to what I have gathered as well. They do hire F/Os some times as well but at the moment are only recruiting captains on the Dash 400, you must have 500hrs PIC on a Dash variant. They pay you 1000 dollars to commute but there is also a living allowance of 2000us and the salary is just above six. At the end of each year you get a really nice check as well for the three years. Not to sure what the salary is for F/Os but the allowances would be the same.
