300 NM cross country

Post by Servisair »

Hey everyone. Im getting ready to do my 300 NM commercial cross country. I will be leaving out of the Toronto area and I would like to try a trip west of here. I am looking for any sugestions of airports that would be good to see. Somewhere in the 300-500NM from Toronto. Where have you guys been? Which places are good or bad and why? Thanks.

300 nm west of TO puts you in the States. And into redneck country in Michigan.

I'd say head south. You don't have to go to far to find something interesting. Washington, DC is about 300 nm and there they have the Smithsonian airplane museum right on the field. It's free entry after you pay $12 for parking.

When you planning on going?

If you don't want to deal with Customs, Sault Ste. Marie is about as West as you can go from Toronto and the trip is scenic.

Do check the weather, especially for when you're heading back.

Why? I wasn't trying to be funny. If you are going to get a commercial license you may as well get used to customs and flying in to the States. Did I miss something.

Dulles Airport, KIAD is outside of that TFR. That's where the Smithsonian is located.

I'm going to New York for my X-country in a month or two. If you're in Toronto and interested in joining me, we can log one trip each.

Cheers

I know that because I went to the museum when I flew there. Buy some gas at the FBO and they'll let you use the crew car. It's a 3 minute drive.

It's only a suggestion. Fly where you feel comfortable. It is busy around there I'll admit and I went in IFR in a TCAS equipped machine. With flight following you should enjoy the same level of comfort.

The museum is pretty interesting

What about Wawa?

I did my 300nm in the Fall and went up to see the Goose, because that is about all there is up there... BFO as they say (Butt F*ck Ontario)

From the Sault to Wawa, it helps to stay within gliding distance of the highway because there's no where else to land.

Once saw a Pawnee parked next to the highway by Agawa Bay waiting for the fog to lift. And then there was the Turbo Beaver sitting in Gargantua Bay for pretty much the same reason.

Check those forecasts.

The would be...interesting....flying along seeing airplanes parked on the side of the highway. Hey, you got to do what you got to do. I bet in the winter the weather can change up there in a matter of minutes!

If you'll be leaving from the Toronto area, my vote would be to go east. 300 NM takes you somewhere between Montreal and Quebec.

Despite the redneck-generated propaganda about the people of Quebec, I've always found them to be a great bunch of friendly folks, especially in the aviation community. If your old high school French is a little rusty, it's OK. Many of the Quebecois think it's "quaint"... and it's a hit with the local ladies. If you're a young (or not-so-young) red-blooded Canadian guy, you'll have one memorable trip. I'm a little biased here, but I think the most beautiful (and friendly) women live in the province of Quebec.... and I don't even live there :(

Just PM me if you are unsure about which airports to visit as I have been there many times. :D

Enjoy.
