Revolutionary new economy class passenger seat
AIRBUS is evaluating a revolutionary new economy class passenger seat
that could change airline cabins forever. In conjunction with German
engineering company AIDA it is currently static testing a seat that is
not dissimilar to those we are all used to from the cinema. Basically
it is a tip-up seat that locks into position for take off and landing
but becomes self-stowing for embarkation and disembarkation or when a
passenger needs to get out. An IFE (In Flight Entertainment) package
would be installed too. The test has created great interest and Airbus
hopes to make an announcement shortly. http://www.airbus.com

AIRBUS PRESENTS FOLDABLE SEATS FOR ECONOMY CABIN
Airbus is discussing with airlines a revolutionary seat concept, the Airbus Folding Passenger Seat, for economy class cabins as part of its constant drive to improve comfort for passengers.
The Airbus Folding Passenger Seat was a star attraction at the recent Hamburg Aircraft Interior Exposition and the ILA Berlin Airshow, where the public were able to see the new seat and sit on it. The main objective of this seat is to make it easier for passengers and crew to move around the cabin and access overhead stowage.
To achieve this, Airbus has used a principle similar to that used in theatres and cinemas, i.e. the seat base automatically folds up when the seat is not occupied. The folding mechanism is equipped with a damper that allows a smooth movement up, when the seat is liberated.
When the seat base is up, the adjacent armrest is automatically folded up to ease access to and from the aisle. This facilitates passengers’ and crew’s movement along the aisle, whilst increasing accessibility to the centre and window seats of a triple row.
In addition to improving life onboard, the operational benefit of the Foldable Passenger Seat for the airlines is a significant reduction in aircraft turnaround time, offering increased aircraft utilisation as well as fewer delays. When they board, passengers can move directly into their seat row while they stow hand luggage in the overhead compartments without blocking the aisle, and if the aisle seat is already occupied access is improved to the seats further from the aisle.
The same applies during disembarkation: passengers have unrestricted access to overhead stowage without blocking the aisle. Turnaround time is further reduced through faster and more effective cleaning, thanks to easier access to the floor, smooth seat surfaces and a clip-shaped magazine holder that cannot be misused as a waste bin. All these improvements add up to precious minutes in an airline operation.
Airbus' Foldable Passenger Seat concept has had a warm reception from a pilot group of airlines that are helping define the final product. Following certification test, this could become the first major improvement in economy class seat design since the slim-line seat developed in the late 1980s. The seat could be in-service in about 2 years.
