I once had a controller tell me that you would probably never even see light signals from the tower on a bright day. I'm not even sure how often they dust them off and check them. ATC types, any input here? My controller friend said you should just do what was last discussed over the radio, i.e. what they are expecting you to do. So, for example, if you have been told you are number 1 for runway 25 and your radio quits 1/4 mile final, and there is no one on the runway, continue. They will probably be happy to have you out of the way. But if your radio fails just after you make initial radio contact prior to entering a Classs C control zone, common sense may dictate that you turn around and leave the area (depending on your options of course). Cell phone, if it works, excellent idea! - if you have the phone number, which you probably won't at the time you need it.
Radio failure @ Ottawa International a few years back while flying a piece of crap 150. Luckily, I had a hand-held radio at the ready (for just this kind of scenario) which I was able to yell my intentions into over the noise of the engine. Didnt see any flashing lights from ATC, went in, made the landing, lived to see another day.
i got a landing clearance from such a light last year, on a sunny day, and it's pretty powerful. i was speaking with the terminal, but couldn't get in touch with the tower, so i was cleared to land via the terminal guy, and the tower controller also cleared me via the light gun.Rudderless wrote:I once had a controller tell me that you would probably never even see light signals from the tower on a bright day.
they will flash it until you acknowledge by some way or another, generally rocking your wings, or flash the lights by night.

You can always call 1-866-WX-Brief and press 1 for emergency - that would work if you didn't have your blue book with you.
(Sorry if I am slightly off on what was said... relying on the ol' noggin)TC Guy: squawking 7700 at an uncontrollled airport probably won't help you, unless there is FSS with radar
TC Guy missed the fact 7700 was written and not 7600?
I had a radio failure in an MF a while ago - could receive but not xmit - and it failed after I made initial contact. I just carried on as was to be expected with 7600 on the transponder. Was, however, interesting to hear FSS and Centre simultaneously realizing what was happening...
I was not under the impression you could receive a landing clearance remotely. How does an IFR terminal controller know there isn't a VFR nordo aircraft taxiing onto the runway or a second-solo-student unannounced in the circuit?MCA wrote: i got a landing clearance from such a light last year, on a sunny day, and it's pretty powerful. i was speaking with the terminal, but couldn't get in touch with the tower, so i was cleared to land via the terminal guy, and the tower controller also cleared me via the light gun.
Any ATC folks there to clear up such a situation?
Perhaps TML was on the phone with TWR and TWR had a radio failure of some sort???
it's easy. i was with the terminal, switched me to tower, no joy on initial contact and for a few minutes, got back with the terminal... he called the tower on the hotline, explained the situation, came back to me and cleared me to land... while the tower was shooting green light in my direction.
that wasn't at a small remote airfield in the middle of Boondock, it was int'l airport in Quebec City. no "unknown VFR traffic" on the runway in that case, or NORDO guy in the circuit.
i never knew what the problem was, because on the ground i could easily speak with the tower, but once airborne, no joy at all! i obviously had the same problem while departing later that day. like if my engine running @ 2200 was creating some sort of interference with that particular frequency...
and i'm ATC, so the procedure i described is the actual procedure the terminal guy applied.
