Opinions To Interview Questions Please?

Post by The Kid »

Hey All,

Looking for opinions/insight as to what you would answer to these typical questions?

Assets
Weaknesses
What do you like to do in your down time?
How would we as a company benefit from hiring you?

Etc....

Any other questions and answers to prepare for would be great.

Thanks a bunch

SQ,

Great answer I'll keep that in mind. Anyone else care to share interview experiences.

Believe it or not, SQ is correct. The answers to those type of questions can only be answered by you.

Assets - I'm here in front of you
Weaknesses - I snore
What do you like to do in your down time? - fishing?
How would we as a company benefit from hiring you? - make money off me?

I agree those answers ought to be "from within" and truthful - don't make up things because you think it will make you look good. Oh, and I believe "my biggest weakness is that I always strive for perfection" or some variation thereof, is probably the most easily seen-through response possible. I suggest finding a flaw about yourself - personality, habit, etc. - try to find a minor one but not inconsequential. Also have ready an answer of how you are trying to improve on that weakness, and then have three or four of those weaknesses ready for the interview. Choose whichever you feel is best suited to how the interview is going, and then you'll be ready for "tell me another weakness."

I would also be prepared for "tell me a time when you" stories... had an interview with NWA Mesaba in YQT a few years back and we went over "situational questions" for - no joke - 45 minutes. I was applying to be a rampie, btw... I thoght the questions were a little overboard and I was definitely surprised. I don't think it looked good that I was so obviously caught off-guard. (Hey - I am applying to sling bags into a S340, how hard can the interview be???) Didn't get that job.

Most of the situation questions revolved around past work experiences: tell me a time when you - took initiative - made a major decision quickly - made a wrong decision - resolved a workplace conflict - caused a workplace conflict, etc. but some from "life" as well - tell me a time when you - were scared - were happy - overcame a stressful personal situation, etc. FOR A RAMPIE JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interviewed for airport security, also in YQT and although no specific questions came up that caught me off guard - I was actually pretty well prepared - I still didn't get that job either. Two interviewers - one would be asking a question the other one would stare me down with a vicious, cold and unrelenting stare as I answered. Then, they switched roles and the freaky staring guy would ask me something and the woman would sit there trying to stare me down. Bizarre.

In short, be prepared as you can - have stories, answers and even some humour ready to go, stored away for just the right time. Unfortunately, only YOU can come up with those answers.

Still-in-YXL,

Thanks for that response. I do,however realise that your answers come from within (honesty) but...I was looking for interesting answers to these questions that some of you have had. Well, here goes nothing.

In today's Vancouver Sun there is a section called 'Campus Recruitment' and it has a very good, but short, help section on interviewing techniques and how to do a phone interview. I do not know if it is online but I suspect it is.

There is also a small article on how to respond to a behavioural question, such as "tell us a time when you had to resolve a conflict at work."

I suspect you can find lots of info about this type of interview on the 'net.

They also say it is a very good idea to send a thank you after an interview (phone or personal) and my favourite, if there is someone who really helps you out, send (her) a small gift of flowers or chocolates.
