Ah... a new "conservative" budget

Post by Icebound »

..

I wonder how my fellow westerners reconcile this "conservative" government being in bed with Quebec pretty much like the old Liberals were???... ...

Oh and by the way... whatever happened to that 2nd penny of the GST to be repealed????

There is a shitload of good things in this budget. But the fact that they lied about equalization nearly puts them in the ranks of the Liberals. The Liberals were liers and theives now the Conservatives are liers. I seriously don't know who to vote for in the next election. So much for a responsible accountable government. It was good for the first year anyway.

Good point about the GST too.

The GST reduction, even if promised, is a bad tax reduction because one percent costs the treasury about 14 Billion and it encourages consumption which is inflationary. You're better off to reduce investment and capital gains taxes - they have better incentive and a better economic effect.

Read that somewhere.

I hate taxes. Just think, if there was no GST or PST there'd be no reason for those scumsucking customs dorks for getting in your face all the time.

I hate Customs "...how many litres of gin did you bring in? How long were you out of the country...?" almost more than regular politicians. Go and blow yourselves up and stay out of oops I'd better go and lie down. Goodnight all.

There is some good and some Bad. The budget overall is very Red Conservative, which is bit of vote buying, but also due to their minority status. The Fiscal imbalance is a term politicians like to throw around, but no one knows what it really means, or can't really agree on anything. This time they threw out a couple of options to the provinces for equalization, so they can now decide. Tax cuts don't seem to be ranking very high on peoples agendas right now. The environment, health care seem to be taking the headlines. The one thing you must remember about any government is they will say and do anything to stay in power, so eventually they are all liars, you just have to try and pick the best bunch liars:)

you call it vote buying, but IMHO Canadians didnt vote in a big enough majority for one ideology or another so compromises were made to reflect the will of the electorate.

I think if people would get past the seperation views of the Block and listened to what Duceppe has to say they might find out that he has allot of good ideas and integrity. (I dont mean vote for them but understand that its not so bad for the Conservatives to be "in bed" with them.)
Oh and by the way... whatever happened to that 2nd penny of the GST to be repealed????
At least one penny was repealed, the Liberals said in more than one red book that they would eliminate the GST and they never TOUCHED it.

Flame away,

Exactly. They get to stay in power, or they get a no confidence vote from the Liberal party for putting forward a budget very similar to what the Liberals would, and win more seats. This is not the budget you'd see if they had 160 seats.

The 2 billion extra to Quebec is a piss off, though.

Didn't they announce more money for families? They should set up a Child Care program as well.

It's not fair, the single person gets nothing, no child care money, no tax breaks, grrrr.

This country lives on the backs of the average family. As far as taking care of the kids, think of it as an investment-one in Canada's future taxpayers.

"A society that wants to have a highly competitive population for the future to cope with the demands of the emerging knowledge-based world and global economy will have to ensure that all its children have the best stimulation and nourishment during the critical early years of development, regardless of family circumstances. Investments in the early period of life are as important as investments in education, post secondary education and health care."1
"The overwhelming majority of women require at least some assistance in caring for their children in order to pursue their professional and educational goals," said Dr. Bennett.

"And most of them can't consistently rely on family and friends to meet that need. The shortage of affordable, quality child care spaces is a tremendous barrier to women's full participation in Canadian society. Telling a woman that she's free to pursue a profession when the child care spaces don't exist is like telling a kid they can play hockey as long as they don't leave their room. It's the illusion of choice."

According to Statistics Canada, 70 per cent of women with kids aged three to five are working mothers, up from 37 per cent 30 years ago. This means that the majority of parents in this country cannot afford to stay at home full time to care for their children -a reality that the Prime Minister’s child care allowance of $100 per month will not make any easier.

"This isn't about whether child care should replace parenting, and it's not about the government trying to tell people how to raise their kids” Dr. Bennett continued. “It's about making early learning resources available to families and ensuring that real choices about quality child care exist for Canadian women."

The Conservative government's move to tear up the 10 provincial child care agreements negotiated by the Liberals to create a National Early Learning and Child Care program is in stark opposition to the ideals of International Women's Day. Without an increase in quality, affordable child care spaces, it will continue to be difficult for Canadian women to strike that important balance between their professional and family lives.
Here is one agreement that was cancelled, http://www.gov.mb.ca/fs/childcare/pco_manitoba_e.pdf

It's too bad because this was a five year plan committed to develop a early learning and child care system. It's an interesting read.

Personally I like the budget. There should be enough tax savings in it for me to offset the annual cost of McGuinty's Ontario Health Tax from a couple years ago.
As far as child-care goes, it's a noble idea but we can't afford the social programs we have now. I think even the Martin Liberals knew that, why else would that bill die on the table after promising it for 12 years?
I did enjoy watching Duceppe and the Bloc sucker punch Boisclair by backing the budget. Smart move to pit the sovereignist(sp?) against the seperatist, then reap the votes needed to keep a minority gov. chugging along and getting things done.

edited to add- The second percent of the GST cut was promised by 2010 or 11 if I recall correctly.

looking after your own kids is an investment. Having child care programs where other people look after your kids is not. Thats why so many kids are screwed up because their parents are more worried about maintaining the middleclass lifestyle then teaching their kids right or wrong.

I agree with you, however, it may be neccessary to put the kids in daycare a couple of days a week. Learning to deal with other people/children is important as well. Not everyone dumps the kids off there 10 hrs a day 5 days a week. Kids are screwed up because their parents are assholes.
