Looking for Moving Map GPS

Post by Nimble »

Hello

I was told this is a good place to ask questions.

I will be taking a trip to Amsterdam. I am looking for a good Moving-Map GPS. Any suggestions?

My budget is approx. US$2500-US$3500.

Thanks.

ps: Cheaper used ones would also do.

If you do a search on Google it is possible to find used Garmin 430's for around $3500.

If your going to go with a handeld GPS, you cant go wrong with a Garmin GPSmap296. All the features of previous Garmins, plus better colour (sunlight readable) and now has terrain and obstacle data built in. Costs around $2400 Cdn.

If you dont want colour and or the obstacle/terrain stuff, the GPSmap 196 is a very good GPS as well and a lot more affordable at around $1600 Cdn.

I've used both, (as well as others from Lowrance/Magellan and Trimble) and if I had the funds, the 296 would be in my flightbag.

Cheers!

I just took a looked at the GPS Map 296. Looks like quite a little unit.

One information I couldn't find on their website, (may be looking in the wrong places), is does it come with world wide data? Or do they come only in North American data?

I will need the European data, such as roads, lakes, cities, etc.

Thanks a bunch for the help.

http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap296/

Comes with one of three databases.

I have the 196 and love it but if I had the cash, I too would have a 296.
