Maldives Air Taxi
Wondering if they are always looking for F/Os or just certain times of the year. Anyone know if junior f/o's make more than minimum wage, and do they actually get to log anytime? They posted that a junior f/o only needs float time, m/e ifr, and 250 hours. Have they actually hired anyone with such low time for the 6?
Just curious. Any info would be great.
Thanks

Duffman: Hey Duff lovers! Does anyone in this bar loooove Duff?
Carl: Hey, it's Duffman!

MAT is more or less always looking for FO's, they get them all from 2 places-->locally or more often from Borek.
Don't bother applying directly, the chief pilot in Male doesn't do the hiring he just gets Sean to send him more when needed.
Of course junior FO's log the time! It's designated 2 crew when you're over 9 pax, which you generally are there.
As far as pay, more than minimum wage? hmmm, well give or take $2000 a month divided by ~60hrs duty a week so 2000/240 = 8.33. So no, not really. Although you are provided with housing a usually a meal a day so that should up your wage a bit.
Low time copilots? You bet, there are numerous brand spanking new 200hr wonders that have made their start at Air Taxi.
You just have to get lucky!

Stay in Canada. There are jobs to be found if you look hard you will find what you want.Stay away from the Maldives its a shithole. You start work at 5am and finish about 6-7pm.Its all VFR work even if the weather is 200 ft 1/2 vis you go anyways. They don't care what you think the work has to be done.So good luck if you go there. You will have to stay 6 months or pay for your PPC.So again good luck you will need it.
MAT stands for Sri Lankan Air Taxi
Well it's really 65hrs/week and they maximize that! Right now they are very short of people (wonder why???) so the poor saps that are down there are working over time and at the end of the day you almost have to get on your knee's to get a ride to where you get the dhoni. The management is horrible, they have no clue how to treat people so don't expect any favors from them. No such thing as maintenance when there is a trip to do, that comes second. As said by the guy above any weather other than a full out monsoon is good to go! They send you to resorts and have everyone sleep in the same room on a regular basis. You will fly about a 100hrs/month maybe more now. You don't get lunch breaks, they will say you do but if you can stuff a sandwich down your mouth in 2 min then I guess thats lunch. The list goes on and on, give it a try, gaurantee after 6 months you will want to slice you throat, LOL
All in all a fantastic place to work, NOT! Better to stay at home or at least go to work for TMA.
Good luck!

This is up to date and reliable!
Trust me dude it sucks! Even now the management there is at an all time low, the new op's man is worse than the last and the last was real bad! That place will never get better until there is a shake up in the upper ranks or they hire some one who actually has a management background. The whole Maldives is full of arrogant wannabee's who love to rain on small guys and poor TO drivers. Unfortunately it is just like that.
It could be one of the best jobs around but there is areason they are always short and because of that the guys left there have to work there ass off.
Have fun, wahaha!!!!!

I wouldn't say TMA was any better Pay's less for FO's and you get to work 6 days a week not the 5 that MAT does, and you over night 4-5 nights a week. as much as i hate to say it the ramp would be the smarter option.Better to stay at home or at least go to work for TMA.
My 2 cents

Just like I said, some valid points but obvious lack of knowledge. Your right about the duty hours. They will work you as much as they can. Your not far off on management however if you DO NOT ask them for any favours why would you do them any? Understand what I am saying? Maintenance is not the issue its manpower. When they are given the time to fix an airplane they do. However when there is only one or two licensed engineers on duty that can sign off on an airplane on any given day it makes it hard. They are extremely short staffed so things dont always happen right away. If there is a snag, snag it. Its there problem they are short guys to fix the airplanes. Remember they dont give favours so why should you do any for them. Good to go in any weather? I have never been pushed to do a trip when I think the weather is bad. Everyone in one room at a shut down? I have personaly never had a one room shut down as a co pilot or as a captain, they happen very few and far in between. Lunch is as easy as asking for it. Just ask for it before a trip and when you come back walk away and take your 20 mins. If they release the flight dont budge. Finish your lunch then do the trip. Well after 15 months I am still here with no slit in my throat.
The situation here is forsure not the best. But its easy money, the flying is second to none as far as I am concerned, and some of the best guys to fly with. We have lots of fun! Some things just need to be changed (in management) and it could be an amazing job.
Like I said some very valid points but a lack of knowledge or are you just another frustrated pilot here that wants to throw Nappi and Tamara in the water??

It's like flying anywhere overseas, IT'S WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT!
If you let management get to you or you bitch about not having time for lunch, it's your problem, not theirs.
Besides, you guys are a VFR 2 crew operation. Can't you eat in the plane? WTF?
I say go there, work your ass off, have fun, get good hours and make the most of it. If you let things get to you, you will not have a good experience.

Gards you make it sound so easy and laid back
You know it is not like that, they put all kinds of pressure on you. The op's manager coming to visit you once you snag an airplane?? Nappy calling your flight once you sit down to eat.
Ok, for the person who is asking yes of course it is better than sitting on the dock, in fact you can build time there really quick. You will see theproblems down there, it's just a real shame that some things can't be changed.
Yes TMA does work 6 days, but you only work 60 hrs, duty week so at the end of the week you worked less. Plus everyone down there knows you get treated better at the resorts when you work for them.
The other issue down there is there is allot of planes flying around there now with very low time capt's, when the weather goes to sh*t you'd better keep your head up!

Actually Bandit1 it is a VFR 3 crew operation. Don't forget the Cabin Attendant in the back.
Tofo you are correct only one day off a week at TMA but you are still limited by duty time and while I was there all I heard from MAT guys was bitching about having 2 days off in a row in Male'. You only get 1 day off at TMA but you get early shut downs at the resorts because of duty limits so that is pretty much a day off. I would rather be shut down for the night at 10:00am at Sonevafushi than have a day off in Male'. Also I never overnighted 5 days in a week the whole time I was there. Usually 3 and sometimes 4 but that was because I preferred to overnight at a resort than spend anytime in Male'.
I also heard lots of complaints coming out of MAT which no doubt is quite a different operation than TMA. When I left there were quite a few MAT guys trying to jump to TMA.
All in all it is the easiest hours you will ever put in your logbook. Show me some place in Canada that you can put a 100 hours of -6 time in your logbook a month and have loaders, fuelers, manifest completers and weight and balance completers do all the work for you while you sit in the coffee shop drinking coffee. That is not to mention all the regular 3, 4 and 5 hour afternoon shutdowns at various resorts which still counts towards your max duty time. Well that is the way it is at TMA anyway!
No doubt you will either love it or hate it and that all depends on the reasons and circumstances as to why you are there

You Can Love An Airplane All You Want, But Remember, It Will Never Love You Back!

Also - is there any other operators with good safety records in this area?

no I'm not frustrated at all , I just wanted to make sure where was coming from your sentences.Gards wrote: Like I said some very valid points but a lack of knowledge or are you just another frustrated pilot here that wants to throw Nappi and Tamara in the water??
now you've said all this from inside, what you say about taking your time and not do favors to people that don't , is right.
AS says CLguy, I'm sre these will be the best hours one can fly, all the previous conversation was about guys not abble to live elsewhere than in their little Nowhere and just moaning because they don't get everything right now.

from a captain's perspective being there for 2 month's and coming home with 12-13k tax free or extending and getting up to $350 us cash in hand with an open ticket to leave any time you want goes along way to taking away the frustrations of resorts charging $10us for a pint of beer, and having to walk behind those little basterds without throwing them in the street.
The maldives might be the easiest float flying you do in the world but the lifestyle sucks. go as a captian and go to make money, don't go for the hours and don't go because the islands look pretty on borek's calander.
MAKE SURE YOU GET AN OPEN TICKET HOME!!!!!!!!!!!
Lots of pilots have changed there plans and left in the middle of the night half way through their contracts because they were so pissed off. others have been asked to leave by the company, and yet more have got a big red stamp in their passport and been deported by the NSS.
and yet there are people who have been there for years and love it (not many mind you, and those are usually the seasonal guys)
just my 2 cents

Re: MAT
Good old Dave K., he was an awesome guy to fly with and he was great to me as a chief pilot as well, that being said Chief Pilots are hardly management, and the management was the problem there.SQ wrote:so what is your knowledge about the current situation ?...Gards wrote:Some valid points here but some obvious lack of knowledge on the current situation.

One more thing
Don't forget to wear a big cross on your neck when you go through customs along with a big box of porno, they love that stuff. Also if you bring your wife just remind her it's not the great "WHITE" north anymore and get her used to all the sexual harrasment she will recieve while on her lovely holiday on Male island resort. Don't worry about setting your alarm prayer call will do that for you, five times a day. Also, enjoy your tiny apartment you will share with three other pilot's and maybe their girl friends or wifes.
Enjoy!
