Coppermine

Post by BigWillyStyle »

Just doing a little research into the port facilities in the spot formerly known as Coppermine. Can anyone give me some info on harbour size, depth, road access, biggest ship that can be docked, etc? Any pix on websites would also be helpful. PM me if you like.

Cheers,

BWS

Only Coppermine I know, is Kugluktuk, Nunavut. Way the hell up north. Avgas is definitely a problem there. I have never seen a stait float plane there but sure you can do it. Good luck!!!

There's a road from the river/ bay to town, but no road access to the outside world.

Consideration has been underway for a while now regarding a deepwater port/ road to yzf to facilitate mine operations, but it'll be a while

No port or ships at Kugluktuk, only barge service. Most operators will not overnight a floatplane there in town due to the vandalism.

Heads up for Coppermine, if its calm in front of town you're good. If not you have to land in the mouth of the river and then there is a ramp/dock of sorts located behind town nicely sheltered. The only thing is that water services draw from that location and they don't like planes parked there. Oh well, I parked there anyway.

PM me and I will send you photos by email of the town and where I parked. I would refrain from the piston machine on floats although they do have drums up at the airport you can buy from the co-op and have brought down to the dock. Otherwise the truck will come right down for fuel as previously mentioned. It's a cool spot on a nice day.
