Relief Pilots
Any of you guys/gals out there who are relief pilots with AC able to shed some light as to what it is like in that position? Schedule? Is commuting easy or hard if you do it? Aprox bring home pay a month for first and second year with perdiums (and i dont want exact figures, i'm not that nosey, just estimates to give me an idea)? Awaiting a call very soon and thinking that this may be a good position for my situation. Message me if you have any advice or info.....Thanks in advance.

AC's requirements for a relief pilot are exactly the same as they are for any new hire position. What you are assigned to is based on what positions are available when you are in ground school.Goose757 wrote:What kind of time do you have? What are AC's requirements for a relief pilot?

I'm not too familiar with the way things work at AC. Is the lifestyle for a relief pilot better than the average line pilot? An RP and an FO at AC will make the same money for the first two years due to flat salary. The RP position is considered like an SO position and I believe the flat salary may be for three years. At least it was but that may have changed.
A new hire FO will get an endorsement and fly the line. The schedule will be busier than an RP and not as condusive to commuting.
An RP will not touch the airplane below 10,000 ft and I think there is a requirement to be in the sim once a month. Your schedule will be more condusive to commuting but you will be going to a very limited number of destinations. I am not sure if you get an endorsement. In the past, the RP did not but this may have changed also.

Curious, I could care less if I had to sit in cargo, as long as the pay cheque showed up every month.....Come over to my turf, and then lets talk nervousness....Thanks for the info.......Commuting is the ideal thing right now for my lifestyle, and if I have to take off and land...ooooo, so exciting, to get by in this industry, then it can kiss my ass! Some people need positive reenforcement from thier passengers to feed thier ego, that's pretty sad too.

There are many senior AC pilots who remain relief pilots because of the lifestyle. Some have even bid down to it and taken the 4-year downbid freeze.
10-year 777 RP's on formula pay make about 120K and will probably only work about 10 days a month.
Unfortunately newhires will remain in Position Group as long as they are RP's and never go on formula pay. I hope this is changed some day soon.

Don't want to be a career RP. It sounds very suitable right now for my lifestyle.I am sure that will change. What is the difference in position group and formula pay? and does anyone have the RP pay scale. I found the captain and FO pay scales, but not the RP.

If you are a newhire,(Post CCAA I think?) you will be paid Position Group Pay as long as you remain as Embraer FO or RP. The only way out is 320 FO, EMB CA, etc.
Currently, RP formula pay ranges from about $80/hr for 5-year 767 RP, to a high of $118/hr for a 10-year 777 RP
