It will never happen .
The Soviets tried all that rebuilding nicey nice approach .They went there and built schools hospitals roads water systems and got dead bodies for their efforts in return.Nato will fair no better.
It is just a matter of time until the taliban figure out how to kill for maximum political effect and Nato will back out when the blood starts to flow just as it always has for every army in History that has had the misfortune to find itself in the Afghan killing fields.Where the Afghan women have been known to butcher the dead and wounded soldiers.
The Persians could not tame the Afghans
The Indians could not
The Tribes in what is now Pakistan could not
The British could not
The Russians could not

Well put, 2R,

I heve been here two and half years, and have only seen the escalation of violence. It is a matter of time before it gets like Iraq. Yes there is reconstruction, but it is happening 10 times slower than with the soviets, with ten times more money, and people are complaining about it.
I think that the west does not care about peace and stability here. They want to use their armies, and not in their backyard.
The tactics used by NATO, only provoke retaliation, and more violence. In the north, where NATO is almost not present, it is dead quiet! Now they are beefing up the German presence, so as to start something...

This oh so true of most of the problems of the middle east. Nobody can cure the problems there without the people wanting it.. Unless we can manage to get the locals to believe in our evil ways, there is no way we will ever see peace in that region.

We have to either let them do their own thing or level the area and make it a parking lot.. Anything in between will not work....

Why do we keep believing we know what's best for other countries? We know dick all about their culture, there society, relationships, hierarchy, etc. Just cuz we're from Toronto or Idaho, we've been blessed with this ability to sort out what we perceive to be their problems.

Must be great living in the land of perfection that you can justify millions of dollars fixing other people's back yards.

This threat is no worse than is was before. There will always be the odd plane that will be blown up, but the way the threat is presented to us now is not realistic.
The US is still fighting the cold war. This is just the fictious ennemy, as they cannot use Russia anymore to justify all their expenses and covert operations every where.
It is a shame that our populations have become so brain washed!

Thank you. Glad to see someone else isn't looking under their beds for communists, terrorists, Muslims, Liberals, whatever.

There will ALWAYS be a new threat created by the State Department to justify the war machine and rampant government spending.

We keep believing what we are told the truth. Despite the B.S. of Vietraq, and the deception, we quickly wholesale buy into Iran as the next looming world crisis because the State Department tells us so. Sure, Hum-job-adeen yaps a lot, but so does Hugo Chavez. So what. Let's start freaking out.
