Any comments? At $70/hr, I think this will be the highest rate in Canada. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

That's fantastic that they are paying instructors well! Especially experienced ones. More schools could do the same and people would consider instructing for a career! Good job!!

Great to say you make x number of dollars per hour but if you only work 2 hours a week it's still the same old shit.

Instructors at TAL are not getting paid 70 an hr, it's 40$ and the school is taking the rest. Maybe those cheap aholes that own the place could've thought about what they were doing before they did. Students will head up the road to another school where things are a lot more manageable, money wise. Student intake may decrease and therefore the instructors will make the same as before as a result.

btw they are currently training 19 instructors. So there shortage will be short lived.

they turned my application down. or rather Mr. former cop said that they have all the experienced instructors they need for now and are only hiring "fresh and eager" class iv's.

But if Dave don't like you your qualifications don't matter ....you're not getting in

It's too bad Transport makes getting the required FTU OC so incredibly difficult, expensive and time-consuming.

See, in a free market, if an instructor was getting shafted, he could go independent and offer his services directly to the student.

That's perfectly legal in the USA, but in Canada, it's very, very important to Transport that the instructors get shafted.

From my personal experiences class of instructor does not necessarily mean the best instructor. I have been taught by class 4 instructors where I have left after a lesson and felt I got my monies worth, and done supervisory flights with a class 2 debating if I should have asked for a refund. As my current CFI explained to me it’s sometimes its easier to mentor new employee’s and have them do the job to the companies standards, than trying to get someone who has been at it awhile to conform. I am not making what Toronto Airways and Canadian Flight Academy are paying, but I think they have done a good thing for the Industry in general. For some reason we think the cost of getting a licence, or paying for an instructor here is expensive, you should see the costs in Europe. Thanks to my parents still allowing me to live with them I can pursue my career choice, and I am sure the cost of living in Southern Ontario is higher than where I am. I wish the best to these schools.

I remember my friend not being hired by the current CFI because he had seen my friend's car slide in the snow, ending up against the chainlink fence in the parking lot. The CFI arguement was that my friend showed poor decision making skills and thus causing him to lose control of his car in the slippery snow covered parking lot.
TAL's service hasn't changed. The customer still has to beg them to take him/her flying. They have the best location in the GTA so the stream of students never ends despite the bad service.
But one good thing is that by hiking up their instructors rates other schools in the GTA have also done so....not tothe same scale but it is an improvement.

When did YKZ get a chainlink fence in the parking lot? Are you talking about the one by the threshold of 21? That'd be quite the slide if some crazy douche managed that, probably would've taken out quite a few other cars too.

Let's look at this from a different angle - say that you were looking for more employees, and just as you were outside, you saw one of your prospective employees dicking around in the parking lot - loosing control of thier own vehicle. Granted, aircraft and cars arn't exactly the same, but if you're going to try something stupid in a car (when you've obviously not practiced it before), what does that say about your attitude in general. I completly agree with the CFI here, I'm wouldn't trust an airplane them either.

Id say that the only reason they'd have to beg to go flying is because the airways is booked full, and there's not enough instructors there to handle the demand.
