On a recent trip through the US, the average price for a gallon of regular car gas was USD$2.90 - not the cheapest, not the most expensive, the average.
USD$2.90 / .89 = Cdn$3.26 / US gallon. Now, there are 3.785 liters per US gallons, so that's:
Cdn$3.26 / 3.785 = Cdn$0.86/liter.
I get home, gas is Cdn$1.06/liter.
Do you cows like paying 20 cents extra per liter, as part of the "I Am Canadian" stupidity tax?
Why not say something bigoted and anti-American at this point?
I guess we are stupid enough to live in such a huge country where we need huge expanses of underused roadways. I guess someone has to pay for it. What do you suggest?
Maybe a series of "user pay" toll highways like in the US that you love so well. Ever try to commute down there to and from some major cities? Don't leave the house without change. Lots of it.
Funny how gas prices jump 10-20% overnight? Time to "milk" the tourists? Most of the "BooHooing" comes from the GTA. Arrogant bastards! I've never seen so many self centered "green" folks clogging the 400 series highways in Cadillac Escalades! Looks GREAT on you! I have to travel 12 kms to work. On two wheels! I think it's time for the really big SUV's to PAY!! Take a tour on the 427, 410 etc.....there is always just one fat sack of shit sitting in his ten ton lump of gas sucking crap, bitching about the price of gas! Get off your wallet ya gas sucking slut!

I have not heard anyone speak of a reduction in taxes CID. The current issues are record profits being reported by the gas companies. The cost per barrel price, coupled with those profits does not substantiate the prices at the pumps. Simple math really.

Funny post Doc but it isn't the Escalade set that are whining. It is the min wage folks that have to commute in order to live in an affordable neighborhood. It is the students that are scraping by working two jobs and attending university full time. It is the AC/Jazz new hires that need to live near big cities and have to switch back to generic KD.

They may not be whining themselves, but they (the Escalade crowd) are a part of why the demand and price are so high.
Supply and Demand would allow for a gradual increase, but not for these sudden spikes we see in the summer or before a weekend, it gets out of hand. I would call that anticipated gouging.

Link to a 200 page study done on the gas prices since the Katrina incident. I am not done reading it, but 3/4 through it I can tell you this: we are getting gouged; Purely and simply, ripped off. It's almost like living in a socialist country where prices are arranged and matched openly right in front of our eyes. Society as a whole around the world is paying to grease the pockets of a few select individuals.
Add to that the environmental element (keeping it vague to purposely avoid restarting the debate), and it's clear something needs to be done not only on a political level (don't hold your breath) but mostly on an individual level.

The 3 most important things to remember when you're old:
1) Never pass an opportunity to use a washroom
2) Never waste a hard on
3) Never trust a fart

Price per barrel is one factor. The other is the limited capacity of the refineries that turn the oil into gasoline.
The amount of oil coming out of the ground is not the sole determinant of the price of gasoline, which is an oil product. Oil and gasoline are not the same thing.

Revenue numbers are meaningless, although they are more dramatic sounding when used by the tree huggers to assail capitalists.
Making huge profits is not (and never has been) illegal.

Bang on professor. It's pretty tough to argue that.

So, what do you guys make of all those refineries that were shut down? Demand not matching supply? Come on, the oil cartel is simply creating a rarity. If you almost close the faucet, people will get thirsty and you can charge whatever you want. And who can you complain to? Government? Right. Afaik, the only solution is to do what they did in Quebec's Saguenay region a few years ago, and that is to completely boycott one company and keep on going until the price is in the .75-.80 range. Start a price war. And when it starts going up again, go back to boycotting! These guys were able to maintain prices in their region a good 10-15 cents under everyone else's in the province for many months. It hurts companies like hell when you don't choose them. You're all they got!
So, shall it be Shell, Esso, Petro-can.......?

I agree with the "ride a bike, get a smaller car" arguments but how does one mesh that philosophy with aviation? Am I the only tree hugger here who feels guilty for my profession? And why is aviation so darn slow to adopt eco-friendly(er) technology? (besides the expense to profit margin issues.) Maybe some of the sin taxes on fuel could be used to cheapen the improvement of some of the dirtiest engines in the universe. Seriously do third world nations even use leaded fuel anymore?
Oh crap! After 8 years of luking I not only double posted but outed myself as a tree hugger all in one (double) click of the submit button. Who started this stupid thread anyway? They are intended solely for the purpose of getting people fired up, and why can't I find the emoticon that lets me stick my tongue out at that turd? Grrrr!
