So long Pandora?

Post by co-joe »

So anyone know how I can trick their system into thinking I'm coming from a US IP? My beverly hills zip code isn't enough anymore, they say they won't be broadcasting in Canada after the 16th. :(

Are you by chance using 90210? I think they check that one more carefully than most. I'm using an Oregonian zip code and they haven't sent me a "shame on you we won't be fooled after the 16th" message. Just look up the mailing address of any American biz and borrow their zip. We won't know for sure untill the 17th if it works but it's worth a shot. I know I've found a lot of obscure new (to me) artists through pandora and will miss it if I can't get it anymore.

Any idea why they aren't allowed to broadcast in Canada anymore?

pandora.com - an online radio station (but not in the traditional sense) You plug in an artist or song that is typical of your taste and it breaks it down in terms of rhythm, theme, chords, etc to find other songs you might like and create a custom station (Or 100 of them to suite your various moods)

For you Niss I hihgly recomend Pink Radio.

You can understand her confusion there Niss. If you were man enough to just say it like a big boy, or eloquent enough to live without all the expletives we wouldn't have this problem

So terribly sorry you feel attacked :goodman: I was just poking you with a stick cuz you're so delightfully volatile.

Besides I've never had to resort to complaning to moderators to put you in your place.

In my place? you feel that by spouting baseless allogations of me being a Racist and Sexist becuase of my choice of 4 letter words is putting me in my place? Clearly your opinions of putting people in their place, much like your opinions of what makes a racist and a sexist are quite off.

Boggots rarely understand that they're biggots. So why don't we go with the definition that a racist is one who offends people of other races with their racial opinions, and a sexist is one who offends people of other genders with their gender opinions? By that criteria you fit both definitions. But maybe that's just me. Do you think the mods would allow me to start a poll - Have niss's racial/gender opinions and remarks (or both) offended you? Do you think the mods would let me get away with that, or would you then run to the moderators as you accuse others of doing?

If you wanted to narrow the definiton of Racist and Sexist to that than this board is full of them, but go ahead and make your poll if you want, I wont come complaining to the mods. Its plain to see that you have been gunning for me since that instructor pay thread simply because i did not agree with your point. You wanted to decend it onto a personal level and still try to maintain your holier than thou attitude. I stick by my comment you are a pretentious ****.

Certanly not holier than anyone. I'm a raging heathen.

And I don't have it in for you for any one reason in specific. I just don't hold my tongue when I read something I disagree with. Seems I just disagree with pretty much all your opinions. (Except the very last part of your previous comment. Pretentious - not so much. Four star - ABSOLUTELY  )

I was reading the Pandora part, and checked out the website. They have an interesting and original take on streaming audio. Enough so that if they officially operated into Canada, I would consider a donation/subscription.

As it is, I'll just have to consider fooling them into thinking that I'm a Bud drinking assault rifle owning turkey hunting copenhagen chewing hillbilly from the Smokey Mountains.

Of course, I drove through Caroline not too long ago, so it shouldn't be hard.

Dear Pandora listener,

Today we have some extremely disappointing news to share with you. Due to international licensing constraints, we are deeply, deeply sorry to say that we must begin proactively preventing access to Pandora's streaming service from Canada. We began blocking access from almost all countries outside the U.S. last week and had originally hoped to maintain access to Canada. However, it has become clear in the last week that we just haven't been able to make enough progress to continue streaming.

It is difficult to convey just how disappointing this is for us. Our vision remains to eventually make Pandora a truly global service, but for the time being, we can no longer continue as we have been. As a small company, the best chance we have of realizing our dream of Pandora all around the world is to grow as the licensing landscape allows.

We show your IP address is 'xx.xx.xx.xx', which indicates you are listening from Canada. If you believe you are seeing this by mistake, we offer our sincere apologies and ask that you please reply to this email.

Delivery of Pandora is based on proper licensing from the people who created the music - we have always believed in honoring the guidelines as determined by legislators and regulators, artists and songwriters, and the labels and publishers they work with. In the U.S. there is a federal statute that provides this license for all the music streamed on Pandora. Unfortunately, there is no equivalent license outside the U.S. and there is no global licensing organization to enable any webcaster to legitimately offer its service around the world. The volume of listening on Pandora makes it a very expensive service to run. Streaming costs are very high, and since our inception, we have been making publishing and performance royalty payments for every song we play.

Until last week, we have not been able to tell where a listener is based, relying only on zip code information provided upon registration. We are now able to recognize a listener's country of origin based on the IP address from which they are accessing the service. Consequently, on May 16th, we will begin blocking access to Pandora to listeners from Canada. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative.

We will be posting updates on our blog regarding our ongoing effort to launch in other countries, so please stay in touch. We will keep a record of your existing stations and bookmarked artists and songs, so that when we are able to launch in your country, they will be waiting for you. We deeply share your sense of disappointment and greatly appreciate your understanding.
This is the letter I was emailed. And yes I did sign up from beverly hills 90210, but they're clearly looking at my IP to ban me. I might try signing up from another zip code I guess.

Serious bummer though.
