Good flight school

Hi everone,, I'm here from Scotland for the next 8 months on buisness, and I would like to learn how to fly before I return home.. My dillema is that in the Calgary area, there seems to be a vast number of flying schools in the phone book. Rather than shoot blind and just pick one, I did some research on the web and it brought me to this site..

Can people tell me all the pros and cons about the local schools?, I guess I'm looking for the best school, for the best price.

Captain Dudley- I'll tell you what I tell every potential student, spend a day and check out the flight schools for yourself. Your licence is a big investment, don't make that investment without doing some leg work of your own. Talk to the instructors, see the facilities, check out the fleet, compare prices and most of all see how you're treated when you walk through the door.

I let our school sell itself......and it usually works :wink:

When you look at flight schools there are two things to consider when looking at the individual instructor:

1) Does he really want to "be" a flight instructor or is he just looking to tally up time and hours until he can be a commercial pilot or what have you?? (there are a lot of these...maybe that's why we churn out crappy pilots ..but that's another thread)
2) What is his ability level? It is one thing to be experienced, have high time and know everything, but it is another thing to be able to transfer your knowledge to someone else. Look at sports. Many really good or great athletes never end up as coaches/teachers, and conversely, many awesome coaches have never competed themselves at an international, Olympic or proffesional capacity.

Find someone with the most experience and the gift or talent to teach; one who has the capability to help you develop your skill, communicate with you openly and encourage you.

Don't be afraid to spend a little time and money finding that teacher, and insist on flying with that person, even if it means adjusting your schedule or risk hurting someones feelings. Remember it's your money and your safety at stake. Demand the best buy for your dollar. The best instructors are in demand and may be more heavily booked than others, but that is a small price to pay in the long run. Do not sacrifice your safety, money and the time that it would take to have another instructor come in after you hit a wall and re-train you because a lousy instructor has an ego problem, doesn't care/want to be there or is just a shitty teacher. Ask around, reputations are built for a reason.
