To Rowdy: First let me apologize. I did not mean to imply that your flying experience had any bearing on your opinion. It doesn't! What I meant to say( and I may be incorrect in assuming this)is that with your experience you probably do not have a lot of time living on reserves ,watching "native" funded or owned operations. I can tell this because you keep refering to subsidies and bursaries for these airlines, and these do not exist. There are two "native " owned airlines in Saskatchewan and neither one receives or has recieved in the past any subsidies/bursaries.

If you can point out where I can go to get such monies or maybe pm me with an application form we will cut you in for 10%.

Now as for whether I am First Nations or not. It really has no bearing on the discussion, if you understood how I could possibly be offended by those comments if I were "Native" then his comments were offensive to everyone regardless of their race. What you are suggesting is that only people to whom to the remarks are aimed at should be offended. That is saying only black people should be offended by n*gger jokes. Do you really believe this!!

Once again I will point out that I did not call Doc himself a racist just his comments, there IS a difference. We are all guilty of making racist comments, myself included. So let me clarify DOC IS NOT A RACIST!!!!

Well I guess I have Hi jacked this thread long enough, I will no longer post on this subject on this thread. pm if you like

The subsidies and bursaries are not directed towards airlines.. but other aspects of daily community operations. They(band council etc) do however divert money into lets say.. aircraft and airline ownership that should have been spent elsewhere. I've watched it happen!! I stood three feet on two occasions where council members discussed this. Which sask. airlines are you talking about? Because forgive me if I'm wrong.. they aren't owned by the native bands.. but.. heavily supported. There is a difference.

Perhaps the terminology we've been using is wrong. However.. there are tax exemptions and such. brings fuel costs way down, alleviates GST on aircraft purchases (whats 7% ontop of the cost of a BE200?) How about the income exemptions?

Also, the medevac contracts for the bands will most certainly go to the native funded/owned airline as will anything else related to band operations. Who pays for the medevac services? Does it not come from the provincial and sometimes federal government?

Tons of ways they have advantages. I'm not complaining about it. More power to them for using it. Heck.. a lot of the pilots here got their start from some of these companies.

chu me.. thanks for the apology.. This is not meant to get personal. Just a good discussion. Would love to know if I myself am completly out to lunch

We also squander money on new immigrants, free housing and welfare for all! How about the poor farmers and their billions in farm aid? whaaa, can't make money at your job? Find a new job!! Or Dem fishers in Newfoundland, culture of entitlement for those boys, fish for a month then E.I for 11 months....what a life, maybe they all should move "down south" off dalrock-reserve to where there is year round employment in Toronto..put on a suit boeye and get a real job. Or about those Manitoba losers who got their houses rebuilt after the river flooded? Not my problem, why should my tax dollars be used for someone without insurance? Then there's the pilots who work for 5 months, then collect e.i while living in Thailand for the rest of the year. Then there's a majority of our ancestors from Europe, free land! What a scam!!! All the above, ways the government wastes money on lazy and/or dumb people.

And what about OSAP for the whities in Ontario?? Their not Indians... I thought only Indians get free educations...and the single moms....and the people who default on their student loans ....Maybe we should all get a hate on for them too. NO free education for anyone! No matter how down trodden they are!

The point is, Our government will be throwing billions out the window on someone. The only difference is that the government created the reserves, and there is no easy or even plausable solution to fix this mess....so the only thing they can do is throw money at them. I challenge any of you to find a REAL solution to the social/economic problems facing the FN's. That, or I think y'all should STFU and just be glad your not one of them! You are the master race after all, maybe you should start acting like it!

MUST REGISTERED INDIANS PAY TAXES?

It depends. There are some situations in which Registered Indians do not pay taxes. Under sections 87 and 90 of the Indian Act, Registered Indians do not pay federal or provincial taxes on their personal and real property that is on a reserve. Personal property includes goods, services and income consistent with Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) policies.

* In this document, when the term "First Nation" is used in the context of the Indian Act, it refers to an Indian Act band.

Since income is personal property, as a Registered (or entitled-to-be-registered) Indian, you may also be exempt from paying income tax on income earned on a reserve. For example, Registered Indians who work on a reserve do not pay federal or provincial taxes on their employment income. See the CCRA's June 1994 guidelines of "Indian Exemption on Employment Income."

Registered Indians do not pay federal or provincial sales taxes on personal and real property on a reserve. The federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) does not apply to on-reserve goods or to those goods acquired by a Registered Indian off-reserve, if the goods are delivered to a reserve by the vendor or the vendor's agent. Most provincial sales taxes are applied in a similar fashion. Special provincial rules may apply to items such as automobiles and alcohol. For example, in some provinces, an automobile must be registered to a reserve address to be tax exempt. For more information, contact the relevant provincial tax authorities.

A pamphlet outlining how federal GST affects sales and purchases by Registered Indians is available from all CCRA offices.
http://www.afn.ca/article.asp?id=1714#mript
Purchases:

Status Indians, Indian bands, and unincorporated band-empowered entities do not pay the provincial sales tax (PST) or federal goods and services tax (GST) on goods purchased on reserve.
Generally, the GST/PST does not apply to services provided to Indians if the services are performed totally on a reserve (such as haircuts or small appliance repairs), or if the services are performed off a reserve and relate to real property interests located on a reserve.
To buy goods or services without paying GST/PST, the vendor must be shown the proof that the individual is registered under the Indian Act (ie. your Certificate of Indian Status).
Services acquired on or off a reserve by Indian bands or band-empowered entities for band management activities or for real property on a reserve are not subject to GST/PST.
GST/PST on goods imported by Indians are subject to the taxes even when they are delivered to a reserve by the vendor's agent or Canada Post (unless some other provision exempts them from tax.)
Incorporated band empowered entities buying goods for band management activities either on reserve or off reserve (with delivery to the reserve) are also entitled to this tax exemption on the purchase.

Doesn't seem like you're from Ontario, cos OSAP is a loan, not a free education. 6 months after you graduate, you start paying back the loands + interest.

Why not use some of the labour presently warehoused at taxpayers expense in many fine institutions to build roads.
Start at Yellowknife building a road to Churchill .We could call it the Trans Canada North .We are paying to feed these prisoners we might as well get some work out of them. When they have finished that road they could build all season roads to all the reserves.
It would be win win for everyone .Might give the prisoners some pride back building something .

When the road is complete and all of us pilots are layed off due to shortage of work, we will be able to drive south to start our new jobs
at 7-11.
Are you saying your job as a pilot depends on the taxpayers supporting the Indians on reserves?

Or have I read you wrong?

Roads are what the north needs and since we are paying to feed and warehouse people why not put them to good use.
As for flying they will still fly in and out .There is a road between Toronto and Ottawa yet people still fly .Some even get on a ferry to fly from the Island .It may just help end some of the desperation that some of the people feel because of the isolation.I think that would be a good thing .And maybe Air Canada would have to hire you with 200 hours like other counties hire pilots .

I will have to think about that tunnel idea .I cannot see it happening but i was wrong about the chunnel and i feel no shame in admitting i have been wrong more than once

Have no fear even if they made it a single lane road you would be retired by the time it was finished .As most of the prison population cannot do much hard labour.

All weather roads

Post by rustytools »

All weather roads are the last thing many of these reserves need. You want to talk about a loss of native identity, give them an easy way to import the southern culture. Why do you think the Northern Store was changed to North Mart?

How about drugs and alchohol? Put in a road, and it's easy access for all. It would probably bump Canada Post out of the number one position for transporting drugs(unknowingly of course), but what is the good in that?

A much better idea would be to put the money from this mythical road (which would be blocked from being built by every second band anyway) and put it into programs for Fetal Alchohol Syndrome and the like.

As for special treatment, one has only to look at the IDC in Inuvik. Aklak is only registered for a 182, the rest is all owned by Borek. Great Slave up there is called Gwichin Helicopters. Why? Because they must be 51% owned by a northern, native group to be listed in the "A" group of prefered and approved companies. Mullens/Grubens? Akita/Equtak?
To deny that there is preferential treatment is ludicrous. What is worse is that these shell companies are just another way of funneling money out of the arctic. That being said, the money is there for the taking, but no one up there does.

It is all a mess, and there is no easy answer.

Just some thoughts.

It's typical that there is this negative feedback to a company that is trying to grow in a market dominated by a few larger companies. Yes the PPC prefered is a little weak but you can't blame them for looking for guys with time on type when they are adding a new type to the fleet. It looks to me that it might be a good opportunity for the right candidate thats looking to live in the YWG area. Skepticism may very well be warranted due to the fact that everyone else trying to run 1900's in MB has gone nipples up but hey I wish them the best. Lets hope there's a big enough piece of the Manitoba pie for them to make it work

At 72g's a year I'd be all over this if I were at CMA or any other company that pays next to nothing for their 1900 drivers. Nice to see wages going up!
