Meteorite in Northern Ab. Wow!
A few nights ago I witnessed a once-in-a-lifetime event. The night was turned to day for a few seconds as a meteorite shot across the Northern sky. It brightly illuminated the entire sky. Distant cloud decks became visible, the entire cockpit and cabin were lit-up, and I had the luck to see it directly as it fell to earth. The colors were amazing. Anyone else have the pleasure of seeing this awesome phenomenon?

Is that an UFO? Uhm, no wait a minute he knew what it is, so it's not unidentified...
So then I guess it's just an FO... Nothing more than a flying object
(oh come on, I am just kidding)

Back about 1984 I was doing a Purolator flight from YWG to YQT. About 3am I saw a fireball out of the corner of my eye.
At first I thought it was another aircraft on fire. It was close enough and big enough to light up my cockpit. As it streaked across the sky from south to north it was trailing smoke and exploded 3 times within about 3-5 seconds.
On the last explosion it completely disappeared.
Many years later about 2002, I did an all night flight from Honolulu to Sydney, Australia.
As it turned out, this was the night of a forecast big meteor shower and we were in the best position (South Pacific) to see it.
We departed about midnight and throughout most of the 10 hour flight the flight we saw hundreds of meteors all travelling in an east to west orientation. Many of them were just steaks but some of them were trailing smoke or exploding as they went across the sky. None were as close as the one I saw back in 1984.

We're on the tail end of a bit of a meteor storm, so it's not uncommon to have seen a lot of shooting starts in the last year or so.
Last spring I was sitting on Kits beach at about 2am, clear sky, and we spotted at least 2 shooting stars that came BELOW the level of the North Shore Mountains (cypress/seymour/grouse) so that was pretty cool.

One time we are flying into Kugaaruk YBB on a clear night for a medivac, and we were on approach about to land and we saw what we thought was the Space Shuttle because it was supposed to come back to Earth around that day, it was going from west to east just above the horizon, we were watching it the whole time and it eventually disappeared and then we look ahead and we were about to touch down. The funniest thing I remember was that I screamed at the flight nurse to come and look and her seatbelt was still buckled and she jumped up but then bounced back into her seat. Then I told her to run back and buckle up cause we were about to touch down. The next day, we found out that the Space Shuttle was still in space so I guess it was a meteorite, it left a long trail, it looked like the Columbia tragedy except it was one big ball. Coolest thing I've seen so far in my 2 years of flying.

I saw one Friday night at around 1am flying from Fort Mac to Edmonton.
I wonder if it was the same one that you saw?
The view I got was not quite as spectacular. The other pilot I was with thought it was a quickly approaching aircraft at first, thats about the best we saw of it.
Edit: oops. Had my days crossed up.
I meant that I saw it Tuesday night at about 1am.
