No offense since it was interesting, but how is this in any way aviation related on an aviation website?
I hope we don't all start posting links to YouTube for every 'interesting' video we watch there

Having a standard that pilots lose their licence after making a mistake despite doing no harm to aircraft or passengers means soon you needn't worry about a pilot surplus or pilots offering to fly for free. Where do you get your experience from?

Why do something now when you can do it later??
This is the place to post things that aren't Boeing vs. Airbus. I think you can be banned for posting serious aviation related material in this forum.

My point is that it's redundant to post links to videos on another website. Where's your own originality? Otherwise this forum will be saturated with posts that have links to YouTube from people who say 'You gotta see this'... like we'll be missing something if we don't watch it.
I've watched hundreds of videos on YouTube and there are at least 50 I really enjoy and think other people would enjoy too. Should I post links to each one and fill up the forum? No
That's the point

Heck Yeh you think the rest of us have that kind of time this way you cut out the 50 videos we wouldn't have wanted to watch.GilletteNorth wrote:My point is that it's redundant to post links to videos on another website. And even though this is a Misc forum (yes ugh, <thump> Gillette can read) it's the AvCanada website... I was under the impression the 'Av' in AvCanada was for 'aviation' related material and this site was for people interested in aviation matters. Not for the distribution of pictures of a person made of shit sitting at a computer or a guy with 'man-boobs'. Some people really enjoy that shit (pardon my french and the pun), but personally I think it's detracting from the quality of this site that posters think it's ok to post whatever turns their fancy just because they get a kick out of it and think others should too. I'm not claiming a moral high ground, I'm claiming a moral low ground as in 'this is about as low as we need to go'
Alright then, I don't really feel there's anything wrong with going into other topics. It's pretty much unavoidable with the extensive membership and an open posting method. If you want to view YouTube videos goto YouTube and watch em there. Again, this site isn't a YouTube affiliate is it? Watch video's there, talk aviation (dare I hope?) here.
If you ARE going to link video's from YouTube, seriously, choose a better title for the post. "Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet" tells nothing and is one of the reasons I originally posted. It's just one of those ways a person who really can't get you interested any other way has to try lure you to read the post. It's like those people who post videos on YouTube and title it XxX sex XxX and if you watch it it's their baby pictures or something stupid. YouTube uses a system of flagging some video's as inappropriate but people are posting links without any description of what might be seen. Once the link opens to YouTube the person might get a little better chance of understanding what it is they might be viewing, and decide whether or not to watch it, but not always.
Yes, people have the choice to click on the link or not, and if they click they can (may be able to?) stop the video from playing if they are fast enough.
But... in the end it comes down to two things for me. First, how about just being a good joe and (more?) accurately describing in your post (and/or forum title) what might be seen before someone innocently clicks onto something they just didn't want to see... like the video of guy who tried stunting underneath a plane and fell to his death that was linked on another post. It may have been an aviation related video (there's a plane involved) and a good example of a Darwin Award winner for some, to others it might be something that traumatizes them. Second, no one on the forums would appreciate a person who posts "@#$! you, what you're saying is shit, you're fucking stupid" etc. AvCanada had Moderators that are needed to remind people that some posted comments are unacceptable. I have to think that also means that some videos or pictures that are posted should also be subject to the same standard of acceptability.
Or is it really asking too much that everyone just be a bit more understanding or thoughtful of others?
You can read my profile and see I haven't been on that long... so what? Does that make my opinion less worthy? Does an opinion matter only if it's from the first person to log into a website? I don't believe that and I'm sure you don't either so why bring it up?You havent been on here for very long have you??

From the home page of the forums:
"This forum is for political debate, random thoughts, and everything else that just doesn't seem to fit in the normal forums. THIS FORUM MAY BE FOUND OFFENSIVE TO SOME READERS. PLEASE DO NOT ENTER IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED. We reserve the right to remove messages that we deem inappropriate or posted in poor taste."
Nothing says it has to be aviation related, and you are warned that you may be offended.

Lets discuss retreating blade stall and the reaction of a gimble head rotor system at high speed combined with an offset high thrustline using a high power setting at the moment of flight path disruption due to entering a violent downdraft.
Then after we wade though that I'll relate the story of the sheep we had in a whorehouse in Santiago Chile that had no teeth...
..then you can decide which was the more entertaining.
Your friend Cat.

Let's call it six degrees (or less in this case)No offense since it was interesting, but how is this in any way aviation related on an aviation website?
Lightning hits truck, flash produced, driver could have gone blind temporarily and caused and accident
Lightning result from the development and dispersal of Storm
Storm is part of Meteorology
Pilots learns Meteorology
Pilots don't *usually* mess with Mother Nature

I'll say this, I dont mind the youtube stuff, but any chance you guys could put some text in your posts? Like maybe, what the video is about or what you think about it ie some substance.
I noticed a lot lately clicking posts with vague/interesting titles and nothing but a youtube link, which kinda sucks because my employer blocks youtube and not avcanada.

All I've tried to do since my first post on this thread was make some very simple suggestions about not using these forums to:
1. repost stuff you can goto YouTube to see.
2. Title your post appropriately so we CAN make an informed decision on whether we want to click on the post.
I've read comments in other posts that indicate I'm not the only one with similar ideas.
TheCheez:
My very first post in this thread I said "no offense" to abc xxz and I meant it although I made what I would have thought was an innocuous comment. CYXE's reply was the best reply of the bunch. Simple and to the point regarding my "...in any way aviation related" comment.
Greywolf, I liked the 'six degrees' comment. In that spirit I'll post a video of someone breathing and link it so that everyone can watch it because in some esoteric way they will learn about weather from observing pressure changes in the atmosphere caused by the intake and expelling of the air. With my aversion to innaccurate labelling I'll title it: "sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeettttt." That'll explain exactly what people will be watching when they click the link.
Lillfssister: I enjoy your posts in the forum. But I as I said... I can read. Even with the warning: "THIS FORUM MAY BE FOUND OFFENSIVE TO SOME READERS. PLEASE DO NOT ENTER IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED," some posts are overly-offensive and get removed, but not before many people read them. The warning does not help prevent that and you know it. I'm not easily offended by many things but I did refer to a thread that was posted concerning a poll between Snowgoose and Niss. That WAS a rotten piece of work in my opinion, and has been removed as far as I can tell. There was no way to know that the pictures posted there were going to be offensive until you opened it and started reading thru. I think it was labeled as 'A poll between Niss and Snowgoose." It started out innocently enough, but quickly degenerated. It wasn't labeled "A progressively offensive competition between Niss and Snowgoose to see who can post things to slam the other with. Since we are quoting, how about this from Forum Rules?
So Skycoupe, is that nailing it right down the middle?
I DO choose which links I want to open and read thru. I DO make choices to try to avoid things I DON'T want to see. But I'm sure both you and I would agree that it's impossible not to get offended by something eventually.

What part of this 'agreement' didn't Snowgoose break? Maybe the threatening part but...You agree not to post any abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening, sexually-oriented or any other material that may violate any applicable laws.

Having a standard that pilots lose their licence after making a mistake despite doing no harm to aircraft or passengers means soon you needn't worry about a pilot surplus or pilots offering to fly for free. Where do you get your experience from?

Oh,Oh, I may have stepped across the line with this one????sexually-oriented
Then after we wade though that I'll relate the story of the sheep we had in a whorehouse in Santiago Chile that had no teeth...
Then again it is all in the mind of the person reading it to determine if it was sexually oriented or if in fact the sheep had a gum disease resulting in the loss of its teeth.

Gillette, after a while, you will learn which posters to ignore, and to wait for three or four reply posts to youtube threads (to see what the topic of the youtube link is)before even thinking of opening one. I think of the 49,263 (give or take) youtube links on here I've opened 4 or 5.
I think your newbie "uppityness" (just kidding here...everyone is entitled to their opinion) is what pissed off the old folks
Some of us have been here for more years than we care to acknowledge (fortunately the site got trashed and we all had to rejoin in early 2004, which eliminated our shameful lack of real lives by eliminating our actual date joined and number of posts)
SO if we react badly to criticism of what we consider "our" forums by newbies, learn to laugh at and with us as we do at and with each other on (too) many occasions.
P.S.: My comment to Widow in the other thread was way more directed at her than you
Hadda edit to take another crack at spelling "uppityness" though all you chatters know I can't spell worth spit

That's good advice on the waiting to see what people are posting on a vidoe link. abc xyz's link was the first one I opened here, obviously I wasn't offended by it, but I was surprised and asked a question, answered quickly.
I then suggested what I thought was common sense, correct/accurate? labeling and in doing so being considerate to others, and gave an example of why I thought it was important (possible offensiveness). I think that's why some people got the impression I was offended (I wasn't). I wasn't trying to be critical but that seems to be the concensus made and I've been reading about it since.
