i have some q's about the jaa medical:

after the innitial medical can the medical be renewed in canada with a TC medical guy? or even in the states?

what european country has the cheapest medicals? can they be done somewhere in N America innitially?

would anyone reccomend getting the medical done first before starting Jaa licence conversion from TC?

The initial medical has to be in Europe. The cost 3 years ago if you already had an ICAO compliant class one was 250 GBP. In the UK this has to be done at Gatwick Aeromedical Centre at the CAA's palace. Can't speak for the cost in other countries of the EU.

Renewals can be done in Canada. Dr. Randy Knipping does them and a bunch of other countries medicals in Toronto. You can find his details on the TC website under Aviation Medical Examiners. I will see if I can find his number.

UK Medical, (initial is only do-able at Gatwick HQ) as of December 2006 will set you back £262 if you hold a TC class 1.

In answer to another part of your question, I STRONGLY recommend you do it before embarking upon any part of the JAA conversion. It is A LOT more in depth than TC's (especially the eye test, they also take blood, and I seem to remember the hearing test is quite intense too) It is a requirement of any JAA groundschool course that you hold a JAA class 1 medical before you start study (from what I recall anyways)

If you do a renewal in the UK, you are typically looking at about £90/year.

Speedbird Junior is right. Do the medical first before starting any flying or conversions as the medical over there can put a halt on everything very quickly. If you do have a CAT1 Canadian with a Canadian CPL or higher, the initial is then done to renewal standards and not initial standards which are a lot higher. Must be done in Gatwick CAA Building and takes approximately 3-5 hours. Only 2 bookings per day!

My last renewal in Amsterdam cost 215 Euors, three Doctors and far more in depth than a Canadian medical.

When I did the CAAC medical in Beijing, I think it was about 8-10 different doctors and about 2-3 hours process!

One long hallway in the cold-war era building with a door on each side, and a different specialist behind each door!

At least I wasn't paying for it.

I just got back from my UK JAA class one medical. While the initial has to be done at their HQ at gatwick after that you can renew preety much anyway, just check their listing of accredited doctors.

The medical itself is not that bad really, doctors are more than nice and try to ease the stress.

- ECG at rest
- lung capacity test
- a test to see how fast and hard you can blow air out of your lungs
- standard urine test
- eye exam which consited of that little book of numbers in different coloured dots for colour blindness
- standard eye chart to read
- little passage to read in small test
- that thing you look into with the house in the distance that gets blurry,
- checked to make sure theres no cross eyedness i guess you'd call it.
- the annoying bright light in the eye
- hearing test which is fairly simple, you wave when you hear a sound and thats it.
- Hemoglobin check
- cholesterol check

Last you go see the head guy for a full physical that consists of proving you can move all your joints and stuff basically and the blood pressure.

Yes, but when wearing them your vision has to be correctable to a certain limit (which I can't remember - you may want to check the JAA website)

What will (at least did as of Dec 2006)fail you under the JAA is laser eye surgery. I had a long discussion with the AME about this and he said that as far as the UK CAA were concerned the ruling was too harsh, and in light of the FAA/TC regulations, they would theoretically have no issue with it. However, the JAA (which governs Europe in its totality) says no, so at the moment no JAA class 1 is granted with laser eye surgery.

Some new regulations are coming into effect soon, the European EASA or JAA or whatever its decided to call itself today have been looking at vision requirements and diabities mainly and from what I have heard the rules are going to be less strict.

I just had mine today. As has been said, very nice and friendly staff at the office. Went quite quickly. And as YYZ noted, having a TC Cat one doesn't do anything over here, it has to be a Class 1 coupled with a CPL or higher... I should have read into that a little more before I came over.
