DME ARC using a standard head VOR?
Just wondering if anyone knows the proper method of flying a DME ARC using a Standard head VOR. I have the HSI set to the loc or IB track, and on a 10 nm dme arc as approaching about 11nm or so, I start a turn in the opposite direction of the runway (90 degrees) to follow the arc. Now what exactly do I do with the VOR knob? So far been faking it just turning to keep the DME on 10 nm until I get to the lead in radial or the loc is alive. All of my books show doing DME ARCs with an RMI. Please get me on the right track. The help is greatly appreciated.
Obviously the dme readout is your first and last director to flying a dme arc. You can use your VOR cdi to lead you however. Just
1. center your cdi (from) and take a heading of 90° plus or minus your obs reading,
2. move your obs ten degrees in the direction of the arc,
3. when the needle centers again turn twenty degrees and advance the obs twenty degrees
4. goto 3
So starting on the 360 radial for the DME arc for the ILS/DME 27 approach, make a left turn to 090°, set your obs to 010°. When the cdi centers, turn to 110° and set your obs to 030°. When the cdi centers, turn to 130° and set your obs to 050° ... etc until you are on a heading of 170° at which point you set your obs to your lead radial, review your inbound heading and decision height, and when the needle centers crank the unruly beast over on its ear, get her roughly aimed in the direction of the runway, one dot low on the glidepath hang out the associated paraphernalia, and (provided you have the required visual reference by your decision height) cajole her into your usual masterful landing.
