Is a fence really effective? I'm just asking because I really don't know. Has there been evidence that fences work to deter the animals?
Seems to me that deer and moose would always find ways to get around seeing how airport are large uninhabited areas.
Remember those pictures of the deer hit by the king air posted here a few years ago? Nice to hear everyone is OK.

Do you have any idea how expensive an airport fence is?privateer wrote:Yesterday we had to scare off some deer around and on the rwy. Has any of these airport operators heard of Fences?
In this Albertan economy...estimate in the range of $1 million.
There are grant programs from the provincial governments, but they are small and stingy at best. I know an airport which had deer on the runway almost everyday for 3 months and no fence was put in. It's a much bigger airport than YLB or St Paul as well...
The fence needs to be very high to be even mostly effective...around 10 feet. Even then, deer and moose can still get in. It's a deterrent but far from a solution.
I would like to see a deer get over a 10 ft high fence. A million Bucks for a fence???? We should get Conny's like paris hilton to build them. Plus you can't put a price tag on peoples lives, and not to mention the 1/4 to 1/2 million per PT6 engine plus whatever a half destroyed airplane cost.

fences
Fences are very good, the only problem is when the gates are left open, at that point you have a zoo! Grass is always greener on the Airport side. Damm shame hope all is well ACA is a top notch bunch of guys and girls.
Yes the fences can work. The fence at YLB is a higher game fence type. Since the fence went up, I have only heard (there might have been more) of one occasion where deer got in and that was because the Texas gate wasn't installed yet. Also, as I recall the fence at YLB cost the local rate payers something in the neibourhood of 200K. For the single cost of ACA's unfortunate encounter 3 or 4 small town airports could have been fenced.
Having said that, it would be naive to think that every little town would or could spend the cash on a facility that is all to often perceived to have little economic benifit to the community. Politics play a role here.
Aircraft have, do and will continue to hit wild life. It is simply a job hazard that will be around for some time to come. My hats off the men and women who opperate out of these places every day and do it with professionalism. To bad the pay didn't always reflect the hazard level.

Remember this as well...
No fence...you hit a deer and it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages.
The municipalities cost? Whatever it cost to drag your crap off the runway...
I'm playing the devil's advocate here BTW, I strongly support fencing whenever possible. But it is a tough sell on a small municipality.
