Jeep question?
I know there are some Jeep fans in here somewhere. Looking at a couple of Wranglers in the USA. What can I say? I'm really cheap! How easy is it to get a hard top for a Jeep? Looking at a couple with soft tops. Are they really big buck items? Thanks.

I wouldn't worry about the cost of the hardtop, but the cost of maintenance. Depending on the year, Jeeps are at the bottom of the pack in terms of reliability.
The 3 most important things to remember when you're old:
1) Never pass an opportunity to use a washroom
2) Never waste a hard on
3) Never trust a fart

Maintaining a Jeep for sure is the worst part of owning one, if you do a lot of off road driving!! Although I would strongly recommend getting the 4.0L if your looking at a TJ or a YJ. The 4.0L is a dependable engine, since its based on the old 4.2L block from AMC. Everytime I have the oil changed, the mechanic is always comenting on how reliable the engine is and always see's them (TJ's, YJ's and Cherokee's) coming in with 450K on them and still running. Plus get a 5spd, not the auto if you can drive stick.
Hard Tops are a must in Canada, I would go for a Hard top and get the soft top afterwards. There are tons of aftermarket suppliers for soft tops. Best Top is probably one of the better ones, for quality and price. Getting a hard top maybe hard. Most people dont part with them and if you bought one aftermarket, you gotta ship it somehow.

The following does not in anyway represent personal views and CJ does not endorse any of the above acronyms. They are merely there to add to the humouristic acronyms in previous replies.

Personally, I say go for the 6 cyl with the 5 speed. I had an 87 YJ which had no powertrain issues whatsoever. I think it had about 200,000 kms on it.
Had to replace the front end shimmy dampener, the steering linkage (the universal joint on it was rusty- a real easy, cheap fix) and of course exhaust and brakes.
Lotsa fun driving around in the summer with the top down and doors off.
Don't forget to wave at the other Jeeps.

Came up with this one:
Sorry
About
The
Underestimated
Repair
Needs
In all seriousness mine's been relatively reliable so far, although I suspect my transmission is starting to agonize...
Rode in a friend's Jeep a few times (a TJ iirc, salut Mo!
). Was fun, although I'll have to second the idea of getting a hardtop if you're going to use it anytime in the winter.
Goodbye,
Louis
