And in Aruba, I hear that sometimes the drag racing strip is used as an airport. At least that's what a little Canadian air ambulance company once told me.

I would think you'd be happy to share an airport on a one time per year use with the dragsters. More people come out to the airport who may otherwise not have. Airports are also used for airshows where only the participants are allowed in (except for aircraft needing to land during emergencies). It's the same as dragsters using it really. If you don't use it you lose it...

Having a standard that pilots lose their licence after making a mistake despite doing no harm to aircraft or passengers means soon you needn't worry about a pilot surplus or pilots offering to fly for free. Where do you get your experience from?

Are they running a race in the next couple of weeks? they have bleachers all along the taxiway (I think Alpha) right in front of the terminal.

Our local airport shuts down the runway twice a year for R/C flying. In co-operation with the local r/c club for large contests.

Last year we were going into Valleyview in the middle of the night for a medevac. The airport had been notamed closed for drag racing unless you were an air ambulance. My captain called ahead and even spoke to the head drag racing person to confirm and had been told the runway was completely clear. Unfortunately the person we spoke to was wrong and we were more than a little shocked to see a large black cable stung up about 10-15 feet above the runway threshold. We were able to pull up and just barely get over it and after making several calls to FSS and the MD the drag racing company was fined several thousand dollars.
