Whats that annoying noise in the background (YYZ)?
Every time I fly on the south east sector between Kingston & Toronto, there's a background 2-tone hi-lo squawk that can only be described as the second most annoying noise in the world, the first being the 'gazzo horn'...
If no one knows what I'm talking about...maybe I'll consider lowering my daily dosage of Ritalin.

No...it sounds more like a 2 chime door bell underwater up on full volume thus distorting the speakers.parrot_head wrote:Might be the strip printer. Some sectors have them close enough to the controller to be heard.
No specific timing on it going off. Just every minute or so I hear a
GLIMB#%^#$

Thanks Jonny & Desksgo...You each win a 43" LCD TV for your contribution to this tread. Expect it in 6 to 8 hours. A black van driven by a guy named Guido will be by to drop it off. Make sure you and your next of kin are present.
For all you ATC people, you get a box of fruit & cream filled Skittles candy also delivered by Guido...he'll be @ Nav Canada to make sure 'everyone' gets it.

For the record, I've heard the noise too. Usually above 10,000' and as high as FL210. The noise tends to start (IIRC) somewhere in the vicinity of YPQ/YCF and is usually gone once we start our descent for LANRK. The best way I can describe the sound is that it sounds like the TTC (Toronto Transic Commission) subway system's first & last door chime tones put together and with squelch/tin sound to it.
It is quite frustrating... If possible, I'll try to get a recording of the sound next time I'm heading that way.

Hmmm...Really? A couple of people PM'd me and told me it maybe 1 of 2 things.
If this 'unit' that is producing all this noise over a closed mic with no one really transmitting, I can only imagine the high amount of RADIATION it is producing to those that are in close proximity to this unit.
Kinda like a Blackberry cell phone near any kind of speakers.

Well always go with the first answer given.
One of your colleagues went out of their way to solve the mystery. It does seem to be the strip printer.
If I worked at Navcan and had to be next to that thing squawking all the time, either I'd marry it, or throw it out the door!!! That printer sounds like a mother in-law; you folks don't get paid enough.
Thanks my 'anonymous Navcanada' person, YOU ROCK!!
