What you see there is a transformer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformer
What you do not see is his power source. Could be from a series of batteries or an AC source. Most retail AC stick welders are very simple machines which plug into a 120/240 electrical source and the juice runs through a big transformer and into the cables to the electrode. There are a couple of methods used to change the amperage output. Simple but heavy machines. What Leatherlips has done is grabbed (or created) a transformer, hooked it to a power source, hooked up a ground wire and a wire connecting the electrode and he created a welder. One could use just car batteries and some cable to make an arc welder; not very efficient and can be very dangerous.

He would need ac to make it work. Talk about ingenuity - some lodge owner ought to buy him before his eyes are shot (and his lips drop off, scaring the ladies).

True. And the only reason I clicked on this thread was to see what C-HRIS had to say.

Maybe, but Macgyver would be crying like a girlie-man if his hands were that close without gloves and wasn't wearing a face shield! Although Macgyver would look cool with UV burn all over his face except where the goggles were. Plus Leatherlips could dummy Macgyver with one shot to the head!!! :P
