With no "summon the FA for java" button, a plane's not worth flying.

This accident happened a number of weeks ago, on a 3000ft strip at Carat. Apparently the wind changed direction "just before" touchdown. Bummer

Thats a load of BS, the strip is not 3,000' the wind was constant and they were a little hot.

TONS of buttons, but its not like these new computer flys you look out the window type aircraft. There alot of buttons and switchs and stuff in the old L-188 but ya gotta fly the biatch! Good to hear the repair crew is gettin started on PSH, like I said, she will be airborne by summer!

That may look like a DC-4 but according to the NWT air tanker Contract that BA has had for the last 15 years it is actualy a DC-6...guess starting next summer it will be a L-188 that looks like a DC-4 eh?

hi all,
with permission I used both pics on my website, to save them as a showcase to Joe M's tenacity to keep his skytrucks in use...
The photos are shown on Page 8 of my pages Photos by Friends & Guests;
http://www.ruudleeuw.com/tmp-photos-8.htm
Last year I visited Yellowknife & Buffalo for the first time but since Joe was buying L.188s in Europe I was refused the opportunity to meet him & shake hands.
Next time I hope to see him and GPSH at Yknife again.

So do we have oldmetal and SgtStoke eating crow or what.

Come on you 2 lets have some more of your insightful comments.

Why is Joe doing this or doesnt one ask?

Just to prove all the naysayers are wrong or it it just the way he is?

Well in this day and age you can not just leave wrecked aircraft where they crash. Most governments require that things are cleaned up. I suspect that transporting out Carat Lake on a truck would be expensive if not impossible. If they did the trucking route there would be two options both entailing a lot of work. Cut it up into pieces or take it apart…..neither would be an easy chore in a remote setting. Buffalo has a lot of work put into that DC-4 and I don’t think Joe would want to destroy it trucking it out.

The third option is just what they are doing….rebuild her and fly it out. I hazard to guess it is also the most cost effective.

This not the first time for Buffalo, Snare Lake comes to mind with a DC-3 on the town strip. They put a good nose on that one and Joe himself flew it out. Some white knuckle flying there but that is another story.

Hey Aviguy,

Kick Tom L in the ass for me!!! Tell him to quit dogging it cause we've got things to do when he get's home.. It's OK.. He'll know who it is if you tell him it was his old boss that made him get a licence..

Good luck up there..

well the sheetmetal is complete for the ferry flight back to yellowknife. some people said it couldn't be done but i guess the boys from buffalo pulled another rabbit out of their hat. i for one am glad to be getting out of here. cold weather is coming in and i'm not quite ready for winter in august.
for before and after photos of the aircraft copy and paste these urls into your browser.
