Pilot, worker killed in chopper crash identified
Last Updated: Friday, August 10, 2007 | 2:22 PM CT
CBC News
Officials have released the names of the two men who died in a helicopter crash near Flin Flon Thursday morning.

The pilot was Robin Garnet Maxwell, 25, and his passenger was Blake Edward Hunter, 26. Both men were from Thompson, Man.

Maxwell worked for Custom Helicopters Ltd. of Winnipeg, while Hunter was a live line trainee with Manitoba Hydro on his way to perform maintenance work on a hydro tower.

RCMP officials say it appears the chopper struck the hydro tower they were on their way to repair, about 10 kilometres south of Flin Flon, Man.

Hydro spokesman Glenn Schneider said the fatality has hit the Crown corporation hard.

"We are certainly flying our flags at half-mast outside our offices," he said. "We have made counselling available to his co-workers."

Investigators from the Transportation Safety Board are at the scene, about 600 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg, near the Saskatchewan border.

"They are going to have a look at the scene and see if there is any involvement by surrounding terrain or equipment or that sort of thing," said TSB spokesman Peter Hildebrand.

"They'll have to have a look at the aircraft, take photographs and measurements, see to what extent information can be gathered from the wreckage that is left."

RCMP say the men's bodies will be flown Friday to Winnipeg, where autopsies will be performed.
My sincere condolences.

Another sad accident. I had flown Blake around many times. He was a great guy and partied with a lot of the Skyward guys. Tragic.

R.I.P.

Although Blake wasn't a pilot, he certainly liked to hang out with alot of them. Maybe we liked him. Either way, this is sad news and I was sorry to hear it.
