Way too funny. Only the french could come up with that...if it was Canadian designed it would have to call out "persons with disabilities".

Retard Retard....
I sure enjoyed the AC bus in yyc the other day on landing. Someone keyed the mic so we could all hear the autopilot calling out Retard! Retard!

Here's a youtube link of an A320 on final for those who've never heard it.

If someone in the cockpit was keying the Mike so you could hear it, retard might have been in English.
I would really like to know the flight no. you were on that had this happen. PM me if you like.

Accident speculation:

In an automatic landing, the FADEC's command the thrust to idle at 40 feet. Since the thrust levers don't actually move the retard callout is a prompt that occurs at 10 feet for the pilot to also bring the thrust levers to idle. In a manual landing the callout is a reminder only and occurs at 20 feet.
Before you laugh, recall that it was only a few weeks ago that a 320 went off the end of the runway in Brazil because the pilot left one thrust lever in the climb detent.

I think he is referring to the fact that the aircraft is Airbus design (french/german) as opposed to Bombardier (Canadian) or Boeing (American) designed.trey kule wrote:Co Joe

I think Trey Kule is referring to the fact that Co-Joe stated "Someone keyed the mic so we could all hear the autopilot calling out Retard! That indeed sounds more than a little out of the ordinary to me.

I don't want to get someone in trouble so I won't say exactly when, but we guessed that someone purposefully keyed the mic next to the speaker so we could clearly hear the call out on the tower freq. I don't even know what model bus it was, you can tell by the number of emergency exits or something?
Personally I thought it was funny as hell.
But you never know, it could have been a stuck mic.

You Boeing drivers out there can correct me if I'm wrong
But I recall many moons ago sitting in the jumpseat of a 767, and Captain turning around a saying "Watch this .. we do a perfect approach, and the airplane calls us names". I didn't know what he was talking about until the plane called retard.
So do Boeings have this as well?

No, it's only an Airbus thing.skycoupe wrote:You Boeing drivers out there can correct me if I'm wrong

Although I have not personally done this, I have ridden through a landing where my colleague caused the exact same thing to happen.
Wrassling with the sidestick during the latter stages of the approach and landing due to gusting crosswinds coming over the terminal building, he accidentally curled his finger around the transmit trigger on the sidestick and squeezed it.
Not only did the Tower hear the "Retard" reminder, they also heard a MoFo expletive, the Pilot Flying's reaction to their touchdown.
Only when he released the transmit trigger did we hear the Tower ask if that was some kind of new Airbus call, with laughter in the background.
